You may know your cholesterol numbers… but have you checked your Lp(a)? 🫀

Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is a genetic risk factor for cardiovascular disease that is not included in a standard cholesterol panel. Elevated Lp(a) levels have been linked to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, peripheral artery disease, and aortic valve disease — even in otherwise healthy patients.

What makes Lp(a) unique is that it’s largely inherited and often unaffected by diet and exercise alone. Many people don’t know they have elevated levels until a cardiac event or further testing reveals it.

Patients with a family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, or premature cardiac events may benefit from discussing Lp(a) testing with their provider. Knowing your risk factors early can help guide long-term prevention and heart health decisions. ❤️

Two thumbs up for ABI screening 👍👍

An ABI (Ankle-Brachial Index) screening is a quick, non-invasive test that compares blood pressure in the arms and ankles to evaluate blood flow and circulation. It can help detect Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) — a condition where narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the legs and feet.

PAD often goes undiagnosed, especially in patients with risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking history, or a family history of cardiovascular disease. Symptoms can include leg pain while walking, cramping, numbness, or even no symptoms at all.

Early detection matters — because circulation issues in the legs can also be a sign of more widespread vascular disease throughout the body. ❤️

Bypass… without open surgery?

Advances in cardiovascular care are making it possible to restore blood flow—without traditional open procedures.

Percutaneous Trans Arterial Bypass (PTAB) is a minimally invasive approach that allows physicians to create a new pathway for blood flow using catheters and imaging guidance.

What that can mean for patients:
• smaller incisions
• shorter recovery time
• less strain on the body

Not every patient is a candidate, but for some, it’s a powerful alternative to surgery.

Modern cardiology isn’t just about treatment—it’s about better ways to treat.

May is High Blood Pressure Education Month and while it’s often associated with long-term heart health, it can also show up during pregnancy.

Conditions like:
• Preeclampsia — high blood pressure that develops during pregnancy
• Eclampsia — a more severe progression that can include seizures
• Postpartum preeclampsia — can occur after delivery, when many don’t expect it

These conditions don’t always feel obvious at first. Watch for persistent headaches, swelling in the face or hands, vision changes, and shortness of breath.

And it doesn’t always end with pregnancy: women with a history of preeclampsia face double the risk of heart disease, stroke, and heart failure later in life.

High blood pressure isn’t always something you feel, but during and after pregnancy, it’s something you should always take seriously.

Even when you’re resting, your heart is constantly adjusting—responding to stress, hydration, sleep, and activity.

And over time, small things add up.

Chronic stress. Poor sleep. Dehydration.
They don’t feel urgent in the moment—but they quietly increase strain on your cardiovascular system.

You don’t need a major overhaul.
You need consistency in the basics.

Drink the water.
Go on the walk.
Get the sleep.

Your heart keeps score, even when you’re not paying attention. Prioritize your heart health today – call 281.358.1950 to schedule an appointment with our Houston cardiologists.

That “out of breath” feeling isn’t always just being out of shape
If you’re getting winded doing things that didn’t used to bother you—walking stairs, light workouts, even daily tasks—it’s worth paying attention.

It could be deconditioning.
But it could also be your heart or lungs asking for support.

Especially if it’s new, worsening, or paired with:
• chest discomfort
• dizziness
• unusual fatigue

Don’t brush it off.

Your body is good at signaling when something’s changed.

May is American Stroke Awareness Month — a stroke is classified as a cardiovascular disease. Because it involves the disruption of blood flow to the brain—caused by blocked or burst blood vessels—it falls under the umbrella of diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels, frequently referred to as a "brain attack"

Regular cardiovascular check ups are you first and best line of defense, but it is important to keep the signs and symptoms in mind as they can be subtle.

Remember FAST:
•Face drooping
•Arm weakness
•Speech difficulty
•Time to call 911
