The Alexis Wood Lab at BCM

The Alexis Wood Lab at BCM At Baylor College of Medicine, the Alexis Wood Lab explores how food, family life, and genetics work together to influence health. My views are my own.

We work with families to learn how early choices can support healthy growth and lifelong wellness.

Summer season is conference season for the Wood Lab! ☀️

Dr. Wood had a wonderful time presenting her work at the recent Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2026 held in London. She presented on her team’s findings suggesting that long-term remodeling of the proteome over more than a decade precedes the onset of cognitive decline. 🧠👩🏼‍🔬📉

Fun Fact: Dr. Wood was born in London and was happy to return to England for the first time in over a decade!

Well done, Matthew Darmadi and Ashley Weeks! 🎉

Ashley and Matthew, both medical students, joined Dr. Wood last week at the American Society for Nutrition’s NUTRITION 2026 Conference!

Ashley gave a poster presentation on the positive effects of fruit intake 🍊🍋🍎 on diabetes risk over time, and Matthew gave an oral presentation on the effects of unprocessed red meat 🥩 on lowering diabetes risk. Congrats to you both!

Meet the Wood Lab! 👋🏼

Spotlight #2: Tomi Ibikunle, Research Coordinator I

Tomi recently graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in Public Health. Tomi is one of the research coordinators in our lab working on the “Metabolomic Investigation of Nutrition and Development in Toddlers” (MIND: Toddlers) Study, which focuses on how diet impacts the cognitive development of toddlers.

Outside of work, Tomi enjoys a good book, photography, and strength training. She also enjoys exploring the food scene in Houston with family and friends.

The Wood Lab would not be the same without Tomi’s willingness to help those around her and her ability to problem solve! 🧪💪🏼🥼
