Mindful Moment: Reflection without judgement

How can we look at ourselves without judgement? It can be a challenge to look at our thoughts, our emotions and our experiences without judgement. In meditation the practitioner usually reminds you that you are an observer. That means you watch in realtime how you are feeling. You don’t comment, you don’t fix… you just watch. This can be a really hard part of practice as so much of our daily routine is “fixing” the issue.

Take a moment from your day that may not have gone as expected. Perhaps it involved some strong emotions- frustration, anger, annoyance. Feel those emotions then hit the pause button and take a breath. Why did you feel the frustration? Did someone ignore what you were saying? Did you immediately think “he was being rude”! Notice how quickly your brain jumps to a conclusion - that’s the judgement. Take a breath. Now observe the situation. He didn’t make eye contact with me and walked away. Take a breath.

Retelling the story through observations takes out the strong emotions and takes away the judgements that usually lead to sn*******ng emotions and stress. You can’t help feeling what you feel, but reframing the situation might help you be more present and allow you to respond differently.

Mindful and intentional reflection is a great way to reset your mindset. Observing without judgement is a skill to be practiced. The next time you have a “bad” day go back and observe. See the facts and learn from that experience. Take the judgement out of the process and release your stress. Using a mindful practice might just turn your frown upside down.

June: Mid-year Check-in

We have midyear reviews at our jobs. Why don’t we do mid-year reviews of our personal lives as well? For the month of June do a check- in with yourself! How are you doing with your stress? Did you make a Vision Board in January? Is our vision still in alignment or has our path and goals changed? How are our self-care routines?

Use the checklist this month and spend a moment or two just checking in with yourself. Maybe you will want to make a new vision board or get back into the habit of looking at the one you created. Be kind to yourself if you aren’t where you want to be. If you are on the right track celebrate those small wins as you are accomplishing things.

Reviewing, reflecting and re-organizing is all part of the journey. We can become more resilient and change our mindset. You can do it!

Feeling unmotivated? Uplifting citrus or mint oils can give you that burst of energy you were looking for. You can inhale the oils from a diffuser or straight from the bottle, place a few drops in some water or tea, or if you are daring, place a drop under your tongue for an immediate "wake up".

Mindful Moment: Painting

I spent a little time this weekend working on a project for a theatrical production at school. After getting the materials together I put on some background music and settled into the painting.

I don’t paint regularly so had to focus to make sure my lines stayed straight. After the first few brush strokes I began to notice my breathing pattern. My breath was beginning to slow, I started notice the smell of the paint. I allowed myself to enjoy the colors being used. I let the brush settle into my hand so that I wasn’t gripping it too tightly. I allowed my brush strokes to slow down and just allowed myself to paint slowly. I was truly enjoying the experience with all my senses. I let the music playing quietly in the background anchor me to the project. When I stopped to get a drink of water I felt the coolness of the water as I swallowed and savored the taste of fresh lemon and mint. I found that my mind didn’t wander as I just felt myself enjoying the process of painting. The whole project took a little over an hour and I could feel my mood lifting as I was watching the project nearing completion. I felt that sense of accomplishment as I finished the last paint stroke.

There is still a little left to do on the project before the students can use the props, but it was so gratifying to realize how mindfully I settled into the project. I didn’t set out to make it a mindfulness activity, but realized during the process my mind and breathing knew instinctively what to do.

When we practice mindful moments our bodies and brains learn and when those moments appear in your everyday activities it’s amazing how our bodies just know what to do. Sometimes those “ah ha” moments sneak up on you. When you recognize what is happening it can be very rewarding.

Mindful Moment: Journaling small wins

As we continue our theme of accomplishments this month I want to revisit the mindful activity of journaling. For some of us this is a daily activity and for others this isn’t our thing.

Did you know that by tracking our small wins we can rewire our brains? Acknowledging our small accomplishments releases Dopamine which gives us that positive energy boost and increases stamina. We can combat burn out by looking back at our journal and seeing the physical progress which will aid in the motivation to keep us going.

Journaling doesn’t have to be writing in a book. Although there are some fun options such as bullet journals for those that want to get creative or even small wins books. You can write it on a post-it and stick it to your computer monitor to see daily. Maybe you use your phone and type it in the notes app. You can try to use an accomplishment jar or use a printed jar and stick a dot on the jar.

Those small wins don’t have to be attached to a larger project. It can be as simple as I got out of bed today. Sometimes just facing a busy day can be a small win. Your future you will be better when you can see what you have accomplished. ❤️
