Mindful Moment: Reflection without judgement
How can we look at ourselves without judgement? It can be a challenge to look at our thoughts, our emotions and our experiences without judgement. In meditation the practitioner usually reminds you that you are an observer. That means you watch in realtime how you are feeling. You don’t comment, you don’t fix… you just watch. This can be a really hard part of practice as so much of our daily routine is “fixing” the issue.
Take a moment from your day that may not have gone as expected. Perhaps it involved some strong emotions- frustration, anger, annoyance. Feel those emotions then hit the pause button and take a breath. Why did you feel the frustration? Did someone ignore what you were saying? Did you immediately think “he was being rude”! Notice how quickly your brain jumps to a conclusion - that’s the judgement. Take a breath. Now observe the situation. He didn’t make eye contact with me and walked away. Take a breath.
Retelling the story through observations takes out the strong emotions and takes away the judgements that usually lead to sn*******ng emotions and stress. You can’t help feeling what you feel, but reframing the situation might help you be more present and allow you to respond differently.
Mindful and intentional reflection is a great way to reset your mindset. Observing without judgement is a skill to be practiced. The next time you have a “bad” day go back and observe. See the facts and learn from that experience. Take the judgement out of the process and release your stress. Using a mindful practice might just turn your frown upside down.
