David H. McConnell (Avon founder) was actually a book salesman, and he gave away perfume samples with book purchases. The perfume became so popular (more so than the books ๐Ÿคฃ) that he founded the California Perfume Company in 1886.

So the story starts with Books, but the company itself began by selling Perfume! Its original name was The California Perfume Company!

A few fun facts:

๐Ÿ’‹ Avon introduced lipstick sample cards so customers could โ€œtry before they buyโ€ long before that became common practice.

๐Ÿ’‹ The tiny lipstick โ€œbulletโ€ samples became one of the most recognizable Avon traditions and were often tucked into brochures and customer orders.

๐Ÿ’‹ Many customers carried the mini samples in their purses for quick touch-ups, while others admit they used them for dress-up as kids! ๐Ÿ˜†

๐Ÿ’‹ Vintage Avon lipstick samples are still collectible today, especially the early brass-colored โ€œbulletโ€ versions from the mid-20th century.
