Training young adults with disabilities to prepare them for work.

My name is John Boersma and I live in Hudsonville Michigan with my wife Cristi and my 4 kids Ty, Sadie, Hunter and Wrigley. I have a Special Education degree from Hope College and Master's degree in Integrating Technology in the classroom. I have been a teacher for 19 years, with the last 6 years working at the Tech Center in Ottawa County. I have worked in almost every setting as it relates to Sp

ecial Education, and have worked over the past 25 years in various trades. I started Mission 26 because I have a passion for helping young adults with disabilities reach their full potential in their communities by showing them various career opportunities, teaching them various work skills and employability skills. The name Mission 26 was created because it is our "mission" to help young adults with disabilities learn the skills necessary to be employable before age 26, which is the age where special education services typically stops. On a personal note, my youngest son Wrigley has Down Syndrome and creating something like Mission 26 has always been a dream of mine, a place where people with disabilities can be trained and prepared for the world!

Success story one from the summer: we didn’t post a lot on our new division, but we put a lot of thought and conversations into making something really awesome work! We partnered with Maple Hill Golf and they were top notch with their openness and their hearts. At the end of the summer we transitioned from supported employment to the young man getting hired by Maple Hill. The model proved to work, but it really was an employment success because of the right people, with good communication and great hearts! THIS is what it’s all about with Mission 26, its employees and our partners!

We are so excited for our annual golf outing! The DeGroot Shootout golf outing helps raise funds to support our operations tremendously throughout the year! Session 2 final day: we got to spend the day at The Pines Golf Course helping clean around the clubhouse and picking the range…man we found a lot of golf balls! We also found time to celebrate and have a little fun too! What a fun group and successful second session, way to go and thank you so much Pines!!

Session 2 day eleven: we got to spend the day with Ms. Mendy and learn to how to clean houses! Ms. Mendy is such a great teacher and patient person, the kids loved working and learning from her, thank you!

Session 2 day ten: we started off our day getting a little dirty and sweaty helping our good friends over at Straight Line Directional Drilling & Geothermal, Inc. we helped clean the shop up, thanks for inviting us into your business!

In the afternoon we headed over to Allendale Ace Home Center to work with their crew putting out inventory that arrived on a shipment. Our crew always leaves with smiles saying it’s one of their favorites…because of the partners they get to work with. Their crew does an amazing job of walking alongside our crew, teaching them and helping them understand how to do the job, really a neat thing to witness in a work setting, thank you!

Session 2 day nine: we spent the day hanging out with the animals at the The Critter Barn. We definitely learned that work around a farm never stops and Ms. Mary is a hard worker! We truly enjoyed our time learning and working with her, thank you!

Session 2 day eight: we got to spend the day at Gemmen's Ace Hardware and Ms. Teri knocked it out of the park as usual. We got partnered up right away with putting out a shipment. In the afternoon we tackled some projects to help around the store. The staff is so great with our young adults, thank you for giving us your time and energy to help us learn your world of work today!

Session 2 day seven: we spent the AM at Hudsonville Reformed Church - PCA helping clean around the church! Today we focused on attention to detail, self correction and advocating when more help is needed, they did a great job!

In the PM we headed over to Meijer in Hudsonville where Merari always plugs us in right away! It’s a great opportunity to learn some entry level positions and learn on the fly! We appreciate your partnerships.

Session 2 day six: Boy was it hot! In the AM we joined our good friends at Premier Granite & Stone, LLC and did some small projects for them. Today was about working together as a team when we are uncomfortable. It was hot but the team had a great attitude and willingness to work! Thank you Premier for having us and the awesome goodie bags!

In the PM we headed over to Pater Bobcat Service and tested our sweeping skills. Again the team followed directions, worked together and made a tough job easier by all chipping in! Popsicles are always a win, thank you Pater for having us!

Session 2 day five: we got to spend the day at Maple Hill Golf with Steph, Donny and Mike! We helped them get ready for their massive sidewalk sale coming up at the end of this week and the gear was super cool…so cool the kids all got an awesome new golf hat! We watered the kiddie course, unpackaged goods, packaged tees and put some boxes together. So cool when you see people laughing and working together at a place that gets it…thank you Maple Hill, Steph and Mike for your coordination and partnership, we appreciate you!
