She photographed my wedding. Last week, I got to be in the room she created.

My dear friend Brianna Shrader of hosted the Stories of Motherhood Gala — an evening that honored women and the many forms that love and nurturing take in our lives. I was there with my husband and my mom, and I left with my heart full.

I gifted every woman in that room a copy of Awakened Hearts, Stories of Embracing Light, Love and Limitless Possibilities — an anthology I'm featured in alongside 30 other women who turned their hardest moments into bold, inspiring stories of hope and change. That room deserved that book.

The evening benefited CASA OC — advocates for children who need a steady, caring presence in their lives. If that speaks to you, they are worth knowing.

Being in a room like that always reminds me of something I see in my work.

Growth changes what we want. The goals that once drove us become accomplishments. And at some point, many women start wanting less achievement and more meaning.

The most capable woman in the room is usually the loneliest.

You are the one who shows up.

The friend in crisis calls you first.
Your kids know you will handle it.
At work, you have the answer before anyone finishes the question.
You manage the household, the emotions, the schedule, the invisible labor that nobody sees — and you do it without complaint, without asking for credit, without letting anyone see what it actually takes.

We know you’re grateful. That’s not the question.

The question is — why can’t you also just admit that you’re not happy?

Both things are true. You can be grateful for everything you have AND be deeply unhappy. Those two things are allowed to exist at the same time.
