THE FUTURE

Better choices. Stronger feet. For life.

These first articles are only the beginning of The Training Room Footwear Lab.

The next phase is where this project gets really interesting.

Model-specific shoe reviews. Fit comparisons. Training shoes. Running shoes. Hiking shoes. Kids footwear. Dress shoes. Sandals. New models as they’re released. And deeper dives into the research and clinical reasoning behind how footwear interacts with movement.

Eventually, I want the question to move beyond:

“Is this a good shoe?”

I want to help answer:

“Is this a good shoe for YOUR foot, YOUR activity and YOUR current capacity?”

Because two people can put on the exact same shoe and have completely different experiences.

The Footwear Lab will continue to change as the research develops, shoes change and we learn more.

That’s intentional.

A responsible footwear resource should be willing to update its conclusions.

Everyone is looking at the shoe.

It’s time we paid more attention to the foot inside it.

THE SHOES

There is no single best barefoot shoe.

And after spending a ridiculous amount of time researching this market, I’m increasingly convinced that ranking every shoe from 1–10 misses the point.

Different companies are solving different problems.

Tolos has become one of my favorite all-around combinations of training, everyday wear and clean styling. Freet offers one of the broadest ranges. Vivobarefoot’s Motus Strength is particularly compelling for strength and multidirectional training. Softstar and Realfoot push anatomical width much farther. Lems makes transition easier. Bearfoot builds specifically around strength. And the LONO Flow 2 is becoming a very interesting all-around gym option.

Then there are companies like Altra, Topo and Flux offering more cushioning while preserving aspects of natural foot shape.

That’s why the Footwear Lab won’t simply ask:

“What’s the best shoe?”

We’ll look at toe geometry, width, volume, heel security, flexibility, lateral containment, traction, cushioning, durability and—most importantly—what you’re actually asking the shoe to do.

There are more good choices than ever.

The challenge is finding the right one for you.

FOOT SHAPE

You bought a wide toe-box shoe.

Great.

Now what are you putting inside it?

We spend a lot of time talking about toe boxes while largely ignoring the sock—and sometimes the foot itself.

A foot-shaped shoe can provide room. A toe sock can preserve individual space between the toes. A toe spacer can temporarily encourage separation.

But space alone doesn’t create function.

The toes still need to move, sense, stabilize and produce force.

That’s why I don’t view toe spacers as something everyone should wear all day or as a shortcut to stronger feet. I prefer to think of them as one possible tool alongside mobility, strength, balance and progressive barefoot exposure.

Create space. Restore motion. Build strength and control.

Because the goal isn’t beautifully separated toes.

The goal is toes that actually work.

PERFORMANCE

I spend a lot of time talking about barefoot footwear.

That does not mean I think traditional footwear is inherently bad.

A thin, flexible shoe can increase sensory input and muscular demand. A cushioned shoe can provide comfort, protection and greater tolerance for volume.

Those are different tools solving different problems.

I regularly recommend the Altra Escalante because its foot-shaped forefoot, level platform and cushioning can be a useful bridge for someone who wants more toe room without immediately moving into an extremely thin shoe.

My own closet reflects the same philosophy. You’ll find Vivobarefoot, Tolos, Xero, Feelgrounds, New Balance and WHITIN—and sometimes no shoes at all.

Different jobs require different tools.

Cushioning isn’t the enemy. Dependence is the concern.

The goal isn’t to make everyone barefoot.

The goal is to build healthy, adaptable feet that aren’t defined by the logo on the shoe.

FOOTWEAR LAB

People Before Products.

That’s the idea behind The Training Room Footwear Lab.

There are plenty of websites that can tell you which shoe is trending, which model has the newest technology or which product you should buy.

I want to ask a different question:

What does the person wearing the shoe actually need?

Sometimes that’s a thin, flexible barefoot shoe.

Sometimes it’s a foot-shaped shoe with more cushioning.

Sometimes it’s a hiking shoe with more protection, a trainer with better lateral containment or an adaptive shoe that provides additional support.

The best shoe isn’t necessarily the thinnest, widest, most expensive or most popular.

It’s the shoe that fits the person, supports the goal and places demands on the body that the person is prepared to manage.

Independent footwear reviews. Clinical insight. Better movement.

MOVEMENT

You can change your shoes overnight.

Your tissues don’t adapt overnight.

That may be the most important thing to understand when transitioning into barefoot or minimalist footwear.

Going from a cushioned shoe to something thin, flexible and zero-drop changes the demands placed on the calf, Achilles, forefoot and intrinsic muscles of the foot immediately.

Biological adaptation takes longer.

That’s why I generally prefer starting with short periods of walking, strength training and normal daily activity—not immediately replacing your running shoes and maintaining the same mileage.

Build exposure. See how your body responds. Then progress.

And keeping your old cushioned shoes in the rotation isn’t cheating. Different shoes can be different training tools.

The transition isn’t really from one shoe to another. It’s from one level of capacity to another.

HEALTHY FEET START YOUNG

Children don’t need miniature versions of adult shoes.

They need shoes that actually fit developing feet.

That means looking beyond length. I care about toe shape, width, volume, flexibility, heel security and whether the child can actually move comfortably inside the shoe.

My own kids have worn Merrell, Vivobarefoot, WHITIN, Splay, Ten Little and PaperKrane. The label matters less than how that particular shoe fits that particular child.

And more minimal isn’t always better.

My wife is a pediatric physical therapist, and one of the brands she recommends for children who may need additional accommodation or support is Beavos. Some children need room for an orthotic or brace. Others need additional stability or simply a shoe that’s easier to put on and take off.

Sports create another challenge. Cleats are notoriously narrow, which is why companies like Natur Athletics and Tokay Ultimate are interesting attempts at creating more foot-shaped options.

The goal isn’t to put every child in a barefoot shoe.

The goal is a shoe that fits the child, matches the activity and allows development without unnecessary restriction.

THE EVIDENCE

Barefoot shoes are better.

Cushioned shoes are safer.

You can find someone online confidently making either argument.

The research is much more interesting than that.

Minimalist footwear changes the demands placed on the foot, ankle, calf and Achilles. Cushioned footwear changes how forces are distributed as well. Neither category has been shown to universally prevent injury, and neither should be treated as inherently good or bad.

Minimalist footwear may be useful for increasing foot muscular demand. Modern cushioned and plated shoes may improve comfort or running economy for some athletes.

Those things can both be true.

One of the principles behind the Footwear Lab is that I don’t want to start with a conclusion and then find research to defend it.

Footwear redistributes work. It doesn’t erase it.

The better question isn’t barefoot vs. cushioned.

It’s which shoe, for which person, doing which activity, at this point in time?

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

I ran a marathon. Then a seven-minute run changed the way I thought about footwear.

When I first put on a pair of Merrell V***r Gloves, I assumed my fitness would transfer. It didn’t. Within minutes, muscles in my feet and lower legs were working in ways I clearly wasn’t prepared for.

That experience didn’t turn me into a barefoot purist. It made me curious.

As a physical therapist, I started looking more closely at what our shoes actually ask our bodies to do. Cushioning can improve comfort. Minimalist footwear can increase muscular and sensory demands. A wider toe box can create space. None of those things automatically makes a shoe good or bad.

The question I kept coming back to was:

What is this shoe doing to the foot inside it?

That question eventually became The Training Room Footwear Lab.

This is where the journey begins.
