Still finding white specks in the hair after lice treatment?

Before you panic, they may simply be old, empty egg casings.

Many parents are surprised to learn that dead nits can remain attached to the hair long after the lice are gone. As the hair grows, those empty casings gradually move farther away from the scalp and can sometimes be mistaken for a new infestation.

In this article, I explain:
• How to tell old nits from active eggs
• Why empty casings can stay in the hair
• When you should be concerned
• When you can finally stop worrying

Sometimes those “nits” are about as alive as my houseplants. 🌱

Tea tree oil definitely has a reputation for lice… but what most parents DON’T hear about are the scalp burns, irritation, and super strong smell that can happen when it’s used incorrectly.

Over the years, we saw kids come into the shop with irritated scalps after DIY essential oil treatments gone wrong.

And honestly? Kids at school often recognized the smell immediately. 😬

Natural doesn’t always mean gentle.

Instagram/Facebook:

Does mayonnaise kill lice? 🤔

A LOT of parents try mayonnaise because the idea actually sounds logical… lice need oxygen, right?

But what most people don’t realize is that lice can close their breathing holes (spiracles) for many hours when they sense disturbance, light, heat, or movement. Also, mayo does nothing to kill eggs.

So while mayonnaise may slow them down temporarily, it usually doesn’t stay on long enough to fully work.

In this video, I explain:
✔️ why moms try it
✔️ why it sometimes seems to help
✔️ what we actually see professionally
✔️ what parents should know before trying home remedies

After helping over 40,000 families since 2012, one of the biggest things I’ve learned is:
Focus on the head — not the house. 💛

How do you REALLY know if the lice are finally gone? 😩

Most parents keep checking long after the infestation is actually over.

After helping families for 14 years, here’s what I usually tell people:

You do NOT need perfection.
You need calm, consistent follow-up.

A little itching afterward can be normal.
Old empty casings can still be there.
And not every tiny white speck means active lice.

One tiny itch and the PTSD kicks in 😅

One of the biggest lice myths?
That you need to clean your entire house. 😅

Most lice problems actually come from:
• missed eggs
• missed heads
• skipped follow-up checks

—not the couch, carpet, or stuffed animals.

Focus on the head — not the house. ❤️

Why does lice keep coming back even after treatment? 😩

Usually it’s NOT because your house is dirty.

Most of the time it’s:
• missed eggs
• one untreated close contact
• weak combs
• or over-the-counter products that didn’t fully work

After helping 40,000+ people over 14 years, I can tell you:
Focus on the head — not the house.

Camp season reality check… lice happens. 😅

Summer camp, sleepovers, sports camps, and group selfies mean more close contact — and that’s how lice spreads.

The good news?
You do NOT need to panic or deep clean your entire house.

A few smart habits can make a big difference:
• braid or bun long hair
• avoid sharing brushes
• do quick weekly checks
• focus on heads — not the house

Watch this quick 49-second video for calm, practical summer camp lice tips.

📸 Do selfies spread lice?

Not exactly the way people think. 😅

Lice do NOT jump or fly — they crawl.

A super quick selfie by itself is usually less risky than prolonged hair-to-hair contact like:
✔ watching TikToks together
✔ sleepovers
✔ sharing pillows head-to-head
✔ sitting close for long periods

Small habits can help:
💡 Pull long hair to one side.                                💡Bun & braid hair!!
💡 Leave a little space between heads when possible
💡 Check regularly with a good lice comb

🐶 Can my dog give me lice?!

Good news: NO. 😅

Human head lice are specially adapted for:
✔ human hair
✔ human scalps
✔ human blood

Dogs get fleas. People get lice.

So before you panic-clean the dog bed, focus on checking heads carefully instead. ❤️
