I hit my 8th year of consistent daily meditation last night. I go back and forth a lot on if it’s changed me, but at the moment I think what this daily practice has done is changed the way I perceive pretty much everything. Including the ideas about myself and the world around me. It’s made me realize that our minds are thought factories, and that factory is often working overtime. But knowing this, we can choose what thoughts to give our attention to and which ones we don’t. Meditation has become as much of my daily routine as brushing my teeth. I just do it. I don’t expect anything from it, it’s just a thing I do. I’ve got a lot back from this practice, but I don’t have any expectations of what it will do for me. It has improved my focus (sometimes) and lessened my stress (sometimes). But it’s hard to put into words what all it’s added (or maybe subtracted in a good way) from my life.

If you are inclined to give meditation a try, then you should and I hope this little post helps give you some motivation. But try not to expect anything, just meditate. You aren’t stopping your thoughts, you are observing them and kinda how ridiculous and unhelpful they are most of the time. You are training your focus on the breath or lovingkindness or whatever you choose. Go for it. Give it a try.
