✨The ABCDEs of Moles✨
Most moles are completely benign.
But melanoma — the most dangerous form of skin cancer — can look deceptively simple at first.
As physicians, we use the ABCDE rule to evaluate suspicious lesions:
A – Asymmetry
One half doesn’t match the other.
B – Border
Irregular, jagged, or blurred edges.
C – Color
Multiple shades of brown, black, red, or even blue.
D – Diameter
Greater than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser).
E – Evolving
The most important one.
If it’s changing in size, shape, or color — get it checked.
Medical takeaway:
Melanoma is highly treatable when caught early.
Once it spreads, treatment becomes significantly more complex.
If a mole looks different from your others — what we call the “ugly duckling sign” — don’t ignore it.
