We had a wonderful time celebrating Dr. Price and Dr. Scharf as they prepare to welcome their baby boys! 🩵🩵 We’re so excited for both families as they get ready for this sweet new chapter.

💪 Surgery Residents Take on the HerdFit Games—and Bring Home a Medal! 🏃‍♂️🏅

Two of our residents, Dr. Kelsie Roberts Moore (PGY-4) and Dr. Eric Graulau Rivera (PGY-1), teamed up as the co-ed duo “Threshold Mindset” to take on the HerdFit Games!

Inspired by the HYROX race format, the HerdFit Games challenged teams to combine two miles of running with eight demanding fitness stations—including rowing, burpee broad jumps, farmer carries, bench hops, kettlebell swings, plate thrusters, walking lunges, and a final plate drag to the finish. 🏋️‍♀️🔥

But Eric wasn’t done yet! The very next day, he competed in a duathlon in Indiana and earned a first-place medal in his event! 🥇🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️

From tackling demanding fitness challenges as a team to pushing through another endurance event the following day, these residents demonstrate the discipline, resilience, and determination that extend well beyond the operating room.

🌊 Surgery Residency Wellness: Making Memories Beyond the Hospital! ☀️

Residency is demanding, and taking time to step away, recharge, and connect with one another is an important part of the journey!

Our residents enjoyed time together over two weekends, including a cabin retreat and a pontoon day on the water! From laughter and conversations to making memories outside the OR, these moments remind us that residency is about more than training exceptional surgeons — it’s about building relationships, supporting one another, and creating a community. 💙

Our fall community outreach was such a meaningful day! 🐾❤️

As part of our program’s wellness initiatives, we spent time at the animal shelter walking dogs, enjoying lunch with the shelter staff, and learning more about the incredible work they do every single day.

There’s something pretty special about stepping away from our usual routines, serving together, and spending time with people (and pups! 🐶) who have so much to teach us.

A huge thank-you to the shelter staff for welcoming us and for the compassion, dedication, and love they pour into their work every day. What you do matters—and we were grateful to spend a little time alongside you! 🐾💙🐶

🏆 Surgical Jeopardy at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress!

We are incredibly proud of residents, Drs. Peter-John Plummer and Alexandra Persily, who represented Marshall Surgery at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in Washington, D.C. 🇺🇸

Their journey to the national stage began with a win at the West Virginia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (WVACS) Surgical Jeopardy competition, earning them the opportunity to compete at the national level. They were then selected to represent the state and our program at Clinical Congress!

While they didn’t take home the national title, we couldn’t be more proud of their knowledge, preparation, teamwork, and performance on such a big stage. 👏🏼

Congratulations, Drs. Plummer and Persily! You represented Marshall Surgery and West Virginia exceptionally well! 💚🩺

We had such a great time tonight at the Big Brothers Big Sisters “Kids in White Coats” event! 🩺🤍🥼

Surgical residents, Drs. Edah, Reeves, and Kimble, brought their expertise to the Boo Boo Bison station, where guests got to see suturing techniques, test their own skills with the classic Operation game, and follow along with their very own “medical records” — complete with sticker and stamp stations! 🩹🩺

We loved sharing a little bit of surgery, a lot of fun, and plenty of smiles with these future healthcare heroes! P.S. We are happy to report that Boo Boo Bison made a complete recovery thanks to the excellent care he received! ❤️‍🩹 🦬 👩‍⚕️✨

🐾 In Memory of Rogue 🐾

Rogue, a beloved Leonberger and therapy dog, visited our residents many times over the years, bringing with him an incredible ability to make people smile. ❤️

Rogue recently passed away, and we wanted to honor his memory in a way that reflects the joy he brought to so many.

On September 30, as part of our wellness initiatives, our residents will spend the morning volunteering at the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter, helping care for the animals and supporting the staff who work tirelessly to give them a second chance. We’ll also share lunch with the shelter team as a small thank-you for all they do.

If you’d like to help us honor Rogue, we’ll be collecting donations through the day of our volunteer event. The shelter’s needs include treats, food, puppy pads, leashes, and toys. A New Year. A New Chapter. Same Marshall Family. 💚

Before we said goodbye to our graduating residents and welcomed our newest interns, we captured some last photos of the 2025–2026 team together.

Now, some are beginning fellowship, others are continuing their journey at Marshall, and a new group has joined us at the start of theirs.

What’s a better way to celebrate our Chairman and APD’s birthday than with a mini donut bar featuring fresh, warm donuts?!

Our residents and faculty enjoyed a sweet morning treat as we celebrated a very special member of our General Surgery family. We’re grateful for all he does for our program, our residents, and our department, and we hope his birthday was as sweet as these donuts! ❤️
