Potassium bromate is a flour additive used to make bread rise higher and bake faster. In 1999 the World Health Organization’s cancer research agency (IARC) classified it as a possible human carcinogen after it caused kidney and thyroid tumors in rats. The European Union banned it in 1990, Canada in 1994, and China and the UK do not allow it either. In the United States the FDA still permits up to 75 parts per million in flour. The FDA opened a review in March 2024 but has not banned it. A 2026 EWG review found it in over 200 products sold in US stores, including flour tortillas, soft pretzels and baked goods. California passed a law that bans it starting January 1, 2027. Check the ingredient list on your bread, tortillas, rolls and pizza dough for the words potassium bromate or bromated flour.

🎄🍫 Fudge lovers, this one’s for you! Six easy ways to make rich, creamy fudge at home.

Ingredients
🤍 Gingerbread
22 ounces white chocolate chips, Ghirardelli brand used (two 11-ounce bags)
14 ounces canned sweetened condensed milk
¼ cup unsulphured molasses, Grandma’s brand used
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
1 tablespoon seasonal non-pareils, optional garnish

🧬 WHAT ACTUALLY MOVES BETWEEN LYMPH & BLOOD?

This is where the idea that lymph nodes simply “filter toxins” begins to fall apart.

A lymph node is not a storage tank where unwanted material collects until we somehow “flush” it out.

It is a dynamic exchange and communication center where the lymphatic, circulatory, and immune systems interact.

And importantly:

Not everything follows the same pathway.

🩸 FROM THE BLOOD → INTO THE LYMPH NODE

Specialized blood vessels called high endothelial venules (HEVs) allow circulating lymphocytes to leave the bloodstream and enter lymph-node tissue.

The node also receives oxygen and nutrients through its blood supply.

At the same time...

💧 FROM THE TISSUES → INTO THE LYMPH NODE

Afferent lymphatic vessels bring lymph containing fluid, proteins, antigens, immune cells, cellular debris, and other material collected from the tissues.

Now here's another fascinating part.

💧 FROM LYMPH-NODE FLUID → TOWARD THE BLOOD

Some water can transfer into the nodal blood circulation as lymph passes through the node.

Certain small dissolved substances may also move according to the characteristics of the molecule and the physiologic forces governing exchange.

But that does NOT mean everything carried in lymph simply crosses into the bloodstream inside the node.

Proteins, cells, antigens, microorganisms, cellular debris, and larger particles have very different biological pathways.

This helps explain something else:

👉 A swollen lymph node isn't necessarily a lymph node “full of toxins.”

During infection or inflammation, HEVs can increase the recruitment of immune cells into the node. Lymphocytes may become activated and proliferate.

The node can enlarge because it is BUSY.

It is responding.

It is communicating.

It is coordinating immune activity.

That is very different from being a clogged filter that needs to be emptied.

And this distinction becomes extremely important when we start talking about “detoxing the lymphatic system.”

Lymph nodes are active sites of:

💧 Fluid exchange
🧬 Immune-cell trafficking
🛡️ Antigen surveillance
💬 Immune communication

The more we understand what actually happens inside a lymph node, the less accurate the idea of simply “flushing toxins” becomes.

💳 My card got skimmed at a Costco gas pump last year.

The fraudster walked into a Best Buy and rang up a couple thousand dollars before I knew anything had happened.

Capital One refunded the charges within a few days because it was on my Venture X.

Federal law caps credit card liability at $50, and Cap One zeroes that out.

The lesson: tap whenever the option exists, since a tap sends a one-time token that a skimmer cannot reuse.

Debit works differently, and this is the part worth knowing. Under federal rules your loss is capped at $50 only if you report the card lost or the fraud within two business days, $500 if you report within 60 days of the statement, and there is no cap at all after that.

FICO logged a record number of compromised debit cards in 2025, up 90% over the year before, and 9 out of 10 ATM incidents happen at non-bank machines.

The FBI puts the total cost of skimming at more than $1 billion a year.

For anyone who asked how to run a debit card as credit at the pump: choose credit or debit at the screen, pick credit, and it will not ask for your PIN.

Costco does inspect its readers, often daily, which is worth saying plainly given where mine got hit. Inspection lowers the odds, and it does not remove them.

🧬 SO…DOES THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH DETOXIFICATION?

Yes. Absolutely.

But perhaps not in the way we've been led to believe.

This distinction is important because I don't want the conversation about inaccurate “detox” claims to minimize what the lymphatic system—or lymphatic therapy—actually does.

The lymphatic system plays an essential role in the journey.

Think about what happens in our tissues every day.

Fluid leaves the blood circulation and enters the interstitial space surrounding our cells. That environment contains proteins, immune cells, cellular debris, signaling molecules, antigens, metabolic products and other substances.

The lymphatic system helps collect and transport that material away from the tissues.

Lymph then travels through lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes, where immune surveillance, cellular communication, processing and fluid exchange can occur.

Eventually, lymphatic fluid reconnects with the blood circulation.

And then the journey continues.

🧪 The liver metabolizes and chemically transforms many substances.

💧 The kidneys filter the blood and eliminate selected waste products and excess substances through urine.

🫁 The lungs eliminate carbon dioxide and certain volatile compounds.

🧬 The GI tract participates in metabolism and elimination through biliary and f***l pathways.

Other tissues and biological pathways contribute as well.

So does the lymphatic system participate in what we casually call “detox”?

YES.

But it isn't the body's stand-alone detoxification system.

Perhaps a better way to describe its role is:

👉 The lymphatic system facilitates delivery.

It helps transport material from the tissues toward the places where it can be examined, processed, transformed, recycled or ultimately eliminated.

And this is exactly why supporting healthy lymphatic transport can be valuable.

We don't need to claim that lymphatic massage “flushes toxins” to explain its importance.

The real physiology is much more interesting.

LIPEDEMA PROGRESSION DURING MENOPAUSE: It Is More Than Hormones

Many women report that their lipedema became more noticeable during perimenopause or after menopause.

Their legs or arms may have enlarged. Pain, heaviness and swelling may have increased. Tissue that once felt soft may have become more nodular or firm. Some women also notice reduced mobility or new swelling in their feet, suggesting that secondary lymphatic dysfunction may be developing.

But why does this happen?

Menopause may represent a vulnerable transition, but hormonal change is only one part of a much larger picture.

1. Changing estrogen signaling

Estrogen influences adipose tissue, connective tissue, blood vessels, inflammation and fluid regulation. Researchers are investigating whether changes in estrogen levels and estrogen-receptor activity during menopause affect lipedema tissue differently from typical adipose tissue.

The relationship is biologically plausible, but the exact mechanism has not yet been proven.

2. Changes within adipose tissue

Lipedema is not simply an accumulation of ordinary fat. The tissue may contain enlarged adipocytes, altered connective-tissue septa, inflammatory activity and changes within the small blood and lymphatic vessels.

Hormonal and metabolic changes during menopause may influence how this tissue expands and remodels.

3. Inflammation and fibrosis

Persistent tissue stress can encourage inflammatory and profibrotic signaling. Over time, the extracellular matrix may become denser, tissue mobility may decrease and nodules or fibrotic areas may become more noticeable.

This can contribute to tenderness, firmness and increasing difficulty moving fluid through the tissue.

4. Increased lymphatic workload

As lipedema tissue enlarges and becomes more fibrotic, the lymphatic system may face a greater transport burden. If lymphatic capacity can no longer keep up with demand, fluid may accumulate more persistently.

When lipedema is accompanied by secondary lymphedema, it is commonly called lipo-lymphedema.

5. Venous changes

Venous insufficiency may add additional pressure to the tissues. Increased filtration from the blood vessels means more fluid must be managed by the lymphatic system.

Lipedema, venous dysfunction and lymphatic overload can therefore compound one another.

6. Metabolic and body-composition changes

Menopause is often accompanied by changes in muscle mass, insulin sensitivity, fat distribution and overall body composition. Ordinary weight gain does not cause lipedema, but additional non-lipedema fat may increase mechanical and metabolic stress and make symptom management more difficult.

7. Reduced movement or mobility

Pain, joint problems, fatigue, injury and tissue enlargement may make activity more difficult. Reduced muscle-pump activity can then affect venous and lymphatic return, creating a cycle of greater heaviness, swelling and reduced movement.

8. Genetics, health history and other conditions

Progression may also be influenced by family history, hypermobility, vascular disease, previous surgery, injury, pregnancy history, inflammatory conditions and access to knowledgeable care.

This is why two women entering menopause at the same age may have completely different experiences.

Menopause does not guarantee progression

Some women experience significant changes, while others remain stable for many years. The stages of lipedema describe tissue presentation—they are not a timeline that every woman must move through.

Early recognition creates an opportunity to establish a baseline and respond to changes with:

✅ Appropriate medical evaluation
✅ Properly selected compression
✅ Strengthening and regular movement
✅ Lymphatic and venous assessment when indicated
✅ Pain and mobility management
✅ Support for metabolic and cardiovascular health
✅ Monitoring for new foot or hand swelling
✅ Care from professionals familiar with lipedema

The goal is not to blame hormones, aging or the woman. The goal is to recognize a potentially vulnerable transition and provide support before pain, fibrosis, swelling and mobility limitations become more difficult to manage.
