This week’s finds are dried fruit and whole grain blends, simple foods with no unnecessary ingredients. I love using these rolled grains in my overnight oats, easy way to get variety. Figs are one of my favorite dried fruits, it’s a texture thing!

Vegan-friendly breakfast idea, BUT you don’t have to be vegan to enjoy the waffle! Freeze the remaining waffles to use later. I usually try to avoid added sugar, however, after dividing waffle batter by 12 it ends up being 1 teaspoon of honey per waffle. Use any whole grain flour for different texture or flavor.

It’s been a minute since I’ve shared a video, and I’m so excited to be back with a new series: “Nutritious Finds” ✨ I’ll be highlighting store-bought foods made with simple ingredients and minimal processing—no artificial preservatives or mystery ingredients. My goal is to make nutritious eating feel easy and realistic. I’ve also got another series in the works, so stay tuned for more soon!

This homemade trail mix is perfectly balanced in macronutrients and no added sugars. Always read the label on dried fruits and opt for unsweetened versions when possible. I was able to keep that fat down and boost the protein by using roasted edamame in place of nuts.

I purchased this cake ball pan a while ago and thought it would offer a unique shape for a whole grain treat. Think of them as “donut holes” to go along with the blueberry “donuts” from episode one. This recipe may look familiar, it is the same one used in my Thanksgiving video for dessert.

It is not hard to make your own granola and a great way to get multiple whole grains, four to be exact! When making your own granola it is easy to control the fat and added sugars that are found in most store-bought granola. For a different spin on overnight oats add this granola in place of plain oats.

Next up Apple Breakfast Bar, inspiration came from the PB2 Powdered Peanut Butter Recipe Collection with a few tweaks! No added sugars and three whole grains in this bar, pair with some yogurt to balance out the carbohydrates. Perfect food gift for the vegans on your list.

This is a six-part video series that will be posted over the next six days and includes five baked/homemade treats in addition to a final video with gifting ideas. We eat to get nutrients from our food so let’s give those we care about food gifts that will not sabotage their weight loss or weight maintenance goals. Furthermore, consider medical conditions they may have that can be exacerbated by foods that are high in added sugars, sodium or saturated fat. First up are blueberry “donuts” made from whole grain spelt flour, fresh blueberries then sweetened with honey. Variety is key in our diet, spelt is an ancient variety of wheat with a slight nutty flavor. Whole grain spelt flour can be found at Vitacost.com at a very reasonable price, I have also purchased from local grain mills in Texas.

I am frequently asked for product ideas from my patients. In this video I want to give healthy food gift ideas for the holidays. Many cultures show love with food, however, I ask that you think before giving foods that are not beneficial or can exacerbate the medical conditions of your loved ones. Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension are very common – limiting added sugars, saturated fat and sodium are imperative for proper management. We eat to get nutrients from our food so the foods we choose to eat should be providing them for optimal health. This video is lengthy but I go through many products that would make great gift ideas any time of year. Please share if you enjoy!
