How does laser hair removal work?

The lasers used for hair removal selectively target the melanin in hair. The light energy from the laser is transformed to heat energy which damages the hair follicle and prevents hair from regrowing.

Laser hair removal works best on dark brown or black hair since the laser targets pigment. As there is little to no melanin present in very fair hair and grey hairs, these hairs will not be targeted by the laser.

In order to damage the hair follicle, the hair has to be in the anagen stage of hair growth (there are 3 stages of hair growth: anagen, catagen, and telogen). As there are only a certain amount of hairs in the anagen phase at any one time, multiple treatments are required. We recommend a total of 6 treatments per area to see permanent hair reduction.
