We provide medical care across Eastern Idaho, document injuries, and support patients through life’s hardest moments. Forensic Examination & Response Network, LLC (FERN) is an independent forensic nursing practice providing trauma-informed medical forensic care for victims of violent crime across Eastern Idaho and surrounding rural communities. One of my favorite parts of each sale is being able to partner with organizations that are doing such amazing things for our community. ❤️

One of the things I often tell my patients is:
“You responded normally to an abnormal situation.”
When we’re frightened or feel threatened, our bodies can react automatically. Some people fight. Some try to get away. And some freeze—becoming still, quiet, or unable to react the way they thought they would.
You didn’t choose that response. Your body was responding to a situation it recognized as threatening.
Not fighting back doesn’t mean you wanted it to happen.
Freezing doesn’t mean you gave consent.
So if you find yourself thinking, “Why didn’t I do something?” please remember:
You responded normally to an abnormal situation.

If you have a serious injury, heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, severe pain, or another medical emergency, the ER is the right place to go.
But if you’re medically stable, you don’t have to go to the emergency room just to receive a forensic medical exam.
FERN has a private exam room where our forensic nurses can provide the same specialized forensic medical care in a quieter, more comfortable setting.
We can check for injuries, discuss STI and pregnancy concerns, collect evidence if you choose, and help you understand your options.
And you don’t have to know whether you want to report to law enforcement before reaching out.

💜 Domestic violence doesn’t always leave a bruise.

Abuse can look like control, threats, isolation, stalking, s*xual violence, strangulation, financial abuse, or living in fear of what might happen if you say no.

This October, let’s go beyond awareness. Learn to recognize the signs. Believe survivors without blaming them. Talk about consent and healthy relationships. Check on someone you’re worried about.

Because abuse isn’t the victim’s responsibility to prevent.

There’s always more to learn—and the more we understand, the better equipped we are to support survivors and create safer communities.
