History of Piercings
The Stretched Earlobe

Another civilization in history that was into ear stretching was the Mayans! Around during the time periods of 2000 BC-1697 AD, they would often pierce children's ears around 4 to 7 years old. From there, as the child would grow up they would slowly progress in size of jewelry throughout their life. The Mayans were big fans of making their jewelry out ofJade/Jadite, and when making plugs tended to make a large flare on one side of their jewelry known now as trumpet flares/mayan flared.

They were trade partners of the previous civilization we mentioned, the Olmec, and some of their jewelry shows the influence both civilizations shared with each other. Many of their plugs have a flower resemblance, with petals carved into the outer ring of the eyelets they were crafting. Wearing jewelry in Mayan culture was how you displayed who you were and why you were important, and due to stretching being such a slow process, it was also a way to show patience and discipline.

Jewelry nesting and counterweighting their jewelry were other things they practiced, with one being to make their jewelry display more prominent and the other to help balance their jewelry so it didn't decide to fall out.

History of Piercings
The Stretched Earlobe

The Olmecs, out of what's now known as Veracruz, Mexico were also humans who practiced ear stretching. It is believed that they are the oldest civilization in the Western hemisphere to develop a writing system, invented the concept of zero, popcorn, as well as perhaps the compass.

The Olmecs were known for their sculptures and their most famous are their colossal head sculptures and ceramic babies. The colossal heads were sculpted from large basalt boulders, and can range from 3.8 feet to 11.2 feet. So far, 17 have been found and are believed to represent leaders from around 1500-1000 BC with some from the 1000-400 BC. The smallest of them weigh around 6 tons, while the largest ones could sit somewhere around 40 to 50 tons. Interestingly enough, most of the heads have been found to have stretched ears carved into them.

The ceramic babies statues they made are theorized to be either infantilized portraits of the elite, portraits of mythological figures or deities, or even portraits of real babies. These sculptures date as far back as the 12th century B.C. However, as you can see in the two pictures, despite being infants many of the sculptures have stretched ears.

History of Piercings
The Stretched Earlobe

We move now to Ancient Greece where much of our modern day jewelry, especially hangers and spirals, are based on. Also where our modern shepherds hook style earrings hail from, you can see the prototype for them in the black and white photo. Stretched ears were once again a unisex practice from 900 to 400 BCE until it became limited to women. Translations of the Greek historian Thucydides, who was around during the 5th century B.C.E., show that he felt the earrings were gaudy and worn by effeminate or old-fashioned older men.

Jewelry was standardly used for establishing wealth, status, and to carry your wealth around with you.

A brief note on Ancient Greece: While the thickness of ancient Roman earrings varied, with some being substantially thicker than modern-day earrings, itโ€™s unlikely that they purposefully stretched their ears.

The ancient Romans had high standards of beauty. While plastic surgery was mostly to repair wounded Roman soldiers that came back missing ears and noses or remove scars from gladiators and enslaved people, some ancient Roman women sought plastic surgery to repair their ear lobes after they stretched due to wearing heavy earrings.

History of Piercings
The Stretched Earlobe

Last week we had touched on that Buddha had stretched earlobes, but did you also know that Tutankhamun (commonly referred to as King Tut) and Horemheb both had stretched earlobes? On King Tutankhamun's death mask, it depicted him with stretched ears measuring around 10-12mm( 00ga-1/2 inch). We also were able to find a pair of large gauge earrings in his tomb in the Valley of the Kings, and they are believed to be the first hanger-style plugs found to date!(Bird hangers) In addition to pharaohs, mummies of ancient Egyptian women were found with their stretched earlobes preserved.

Most of their plugs were made from a substance called faience, where they would mix powdered quartz, copper, lime, and flux which is then glazed to harden into a stone-like substance when heated to one thousand degrees. Depending on the class of the person wearing them, you could also find plugs made from stone, bone, gold, and electrum.

It is believed that this practice was actually picked up from the Nubians who served as mercenaries during this time or the Hyksos in Asia. Later orientations of hangers turned into the peg style hangers(circular hangers), where one would put the peg through the hole of the jewelry and earlobe to wear it. They did this to help with balancing and stabilizing the jewelry.

There will be more to come in the following weeks about stretched earlobe due to the practice being so widespread on the planet.

Beautiful vines for a healed flat piercing. I absolutely love botanical themed jewelry, and I was so excited when she chose this one. It's a delicate statement piece, especially with the gem leaves. This threadless end fits her ear perfectly! ๐Ÿ˜

History of Piercings
The Stretched Earlobe

Another thing we have been doing for over 5000 years! You remember our good old friend Otzi the Iceman right? The oldest dated earlobe piercings we currently have physical record of? What if I told he you had his earlobes stretched to 0g?

The stretching of earlobe piercings is a long time tradition of the human race, and generally signified status, beauty, wisdom and spirituality. Ancient groups such as the Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Romans, Mayans, Incans, Aztecs, and many others all around the world practiced earlobe stretching.

One of the biggest names most people would recognize with stretched ears would be Siddhartha Gautama, or better know as the Buddha! There was a prophesy around Siddhartha where he was destined to either be a powerful king or a spiritual leader. To prevent him from becoming the latter, his father kept him sheltered, but shortly after his 29th birthday Siddhartha saw what Buddhist called the Four signs: an aged man, a sick man, a dead man, and a religious man. He came to realize he could become any of these four men so he decided to renounce his wealth, wife, and son in favor of becoming a religious ascetic. During this time period in Asia, nobility wore expensive jewelry in their ears, and the bigger the better! Thus, when Siddhartha give up his wealth, his stretched earlobes remained as a reminder that he was previously dragged down by wealth.

Since there is so much history on stretched earlobes, we will be returning to this subject again in the following weeks! :)
