After 50 things like cortisol and inflammation play a much bigger role in weight loss than things like calories in and out.
And when it comes to visceral fat, calories in calories out doesn’t really affect it, but things like cortisol, inflammation, sleep, stress and WHAT kind of food you eat are what matter.
So if you exercise to try to lose weight and create bigger deficits, it puts extra stress on your body, you often drive cortisol further, which drives inflammation and the cycle continues.
There are three major issues with exercising to lose weight for women over 50:
1- The mindset is all wrong. Thinking you have to work hard harder, push harder, do more, go longer to burn more calories puts more stress on the body.
2- The exercise they do is all wrong. It’s too intense, too long, and too often - The Boot camps, challenges, orange theory, chronic cardio, spin classes etc spike cortisol too much after 50. This in the end slows muscle growth and stores fat.
3- Exercising itself is very ineffective to help you lose weight and often times backfires from the first two reasons above.
100% of fat loss comes from nutrition- I know this because I’ve worked with 2000 women over the age of 50, and none of them exercise to lose weight and my average results are 20 to 30 pounds in six weeks.
So instead, focus on eating the right foods to heal things like cortisol, insulin imbalances, and inflammation, and you’ll lose weight much faster.
