Integrative caregiving

Integrative caregiving Living with the enormity of our role we move out of survival, build awareness & change our lives. ❤️

I am a family caregiver for my daughter Leia who has a rare genetic mutation. She is also non-verbal and autistic and has severe developmental delays. I am also a researcher, people lover, dreamer and innovator who believes the caregiver experience is here to help us evolve. My purpose is to help redesign the caregiver experience through shift-in-consciousness tools, emotional support, wisdom and

community. I believe caregivers need time to move from a state of survival and trauma into other mindstates and my passion is to help you get there.

This November, together with the incredible team at Autistically Inclined, we will welcome a small group of families to Costa Rica for a first-of-its-kind text-based communication camp, wellness, and regulation retreat.

A space where non-speaking and unreliably speaking autistic individuals, parents, siblings, and professionals will come together not to fix anyone, but to connect, have fun, rest, and experience a life-changing week in nature.

If you fancy packing a suitcase and have a few questions about logistics, or just want to learn more, sign up for the webinar next Tuesday June 30th at 5 pm PST / 8 pm EST. If you can’t make it, the webinar will be recorded. Just make sure to register. More information about the camp is in the bio section.

See you soon!

We love music. We listen to it to get high, to get low, to connect, to move, to feel, to remember, to relax, to become present… music is universal and divine. Leia feels it all. It pierces through her multi-dimensional being. She loves seeing us smile.

This afternoon Leia joined us for our ice bath and sauna routine. She wasn’t interested in the cold plunge itself, but she stayed close, spent a few minutes in the sauna, and even leaned over to explore the ice water. It made me wonder how much our children are responding not only to what we do, but to who we become when we do it. These practices shift something in us. We slow down. We become less reactive. More alive. Perhaps what Leia was enjoying wasn’t the sauna at all, but the energy of two parents who had stepped out of survival mode for a moment and into something more spacious.

I absolutely believe in this. I do not think my life as a caregiver is the challenge but rather the possibilities it limits through my survival driven thinking. Finding a way out of this has been a continual process of overcoming experiences that feel dead, boring, and without joy. Maybe your whole life feels like that but that’s also because survival works in a very specific way. We become tunnel visioned.

I have had many situations where I am required to be disciplined and stick to a routine and it’s definitely challenging. But I can also see the reason why I am where I am today is because of all the hard work. One way or the other I have to face discomfort and I choose the challenging short-term stuff to support myself and my family because it always pays off in the long-term.

I have always had a lot of energy. Often I have not known how to manage it. At times it has sent me in unhealthy directions because I didn’t have awareness about how important it is for me to channel it with intentional habits. Today I understand even more. When I exercise and move, my brain state changes. I am able to break up stress and experience possibility that is not available in my default survival state. Those possibilities are always always there. We just don’t see it when we are in survival.

When you engage in moderate and vigorous exercise, your body mimics the effects of stress which helps your system practice different responses to stress. Exercise is non-negotiable for caregivers.

Today was such a special day for me… I feel the universe is sending so many signs.

I finished the first draft of my book called Caregiver Survival Intelligence which talks about the survival experience of caregiving that few of us are taught to navigate with a specific deep dive into our altered survival-state operating system.

I am so grateful to my family for supporting me. It has taken absolutely years!!! I am definitely thinking about setting up a group to explore the many topics in the book which I think will be an amazing and supportive conversation for us all. Say…INTELLIGENCE if you are interested.

Sending ❤️❤️❤️

Music is the ultimate enhancer to our mental state. Music can shift any mood, any time. It can also be a fantastic way to connect with our loved ones.

I am really looking forward to playing music, sound healing, reiki and tuning into all sorts of vibrations with a group of speller families, the amazing and the team for a first ever text-based communication camp and wellness retreat in Costa Rica this November. We’ve got one spot left…

Music Love him too!

All of you have given me courage to go outside with Leia and interact more with local people. Often interaction for Leia can feel overwhelming (and yes she can feel my hypervigilance too) and then there are others like this fruit stand moment when I see both she and the dear man who is pouring the coconut water into the cup are enjoying attending to each other. How quickly do we dismiss moments like these… even with my poor Spanish… when we are all lost in translation and yet connecting anyway.
