Mental health and oncology are deeply intertwined, yet Southwest Florida continues to face a major gap in oncology-specific mental health services.
As a triple board-certified nurse practitioner in psychiatry, oncology, and family practice, I am intentionally focusing my practice on psychiatric care for cancer patients.
From the moment someone hears “this could be cancer,” their mental health journey begins. That journey continues through diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, remission, and sometimes end-of-life care. Anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, trauma, fear, and emotional exhaustion are incredibly common throughout the cancer experience. For patients already living with conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, or major depression, a cancer diagnosis can further complicate an already difficult path.
Having a provider trained in both psychiatry and oncology creates a unique opportunity to better support these patients. I understand psychotropic medications, oncology treatments, how these medications interact within the body, and the complex drug-to-drug interactions that can occur between the psychiatric and oncology worlds. This allows me to help maximize both mental health stability and overall treatment success.
Traditionally, oncology providers may not feel comfortable managing complex psychiatric conditions, and psychiatric providers may not feel comfortable navigating oncology treatment considerations. My goal is to help bridge that gap for our patients and our provider community.
I specifically pursued this education and training to help fill this critical need in Southwest Florida.
I have years of experience serving our Southwest Florida community in both oncology and psychiatry, including experience with Florida Cancer Specialists and collaboration with outside agencies and institutions such as Moffitt Cancer Center, MD Anderson, Mayo Clinic, Boston teaching hospitals, and Miami teaching hospitals. I have also had the privilege of knowing and collaborating with some of the original founders of AON and local oncology leaders throughout our region.
Strong patient care depends on strong provider communication and collaboration. Building these relationships and connections is vital to ensuring patients receive comprehensive, coordinated care.
Collaboration and communication are foundational pillars of ThriveWell Medical Center.
I look forward to partnering with providers throughout Southwest Florida to help our patients not only survive, but truly thrive.
If you have patients in need of oncology-focused psychiatric support, I would be honored to help.
