Most of us were taught to wash our hands with soap and water. Fewer of us were taught what to do next.

Drying is part of the job. Germs transfer more easily from wet hands than from dry ones, so walking away with damp hands can undo some of the good you just did. After you wash for 20 seconds, finish with a clean towel, or simply let your hands air dry.

It is a small habit, but it matters most where people are most vulnerable: at home with children, older family members, or anyone who is recovering from an illness. A clean towel that is changed regularly, or a paper towel, makes the last step easy.

When your parents live far away, worry has a way of following you through the day. Did they take their morning medicines? Did they get the evening ones? Did they mix something up?

Today is World Arthritis Day, and one of the most common beliefs about arthritis is that you should avoid movement altogether.

It’s easy to see why. When joints hurt, resting feels like the safest choice. But joints are designed to move, and staying gently active often helps keep them flexible and the muscles around them strong. Too much rest can leave joints feeling stiffer.

That does not mean pushing through pain. The right kind of movement depends on the person, so it’s worth talking to your doctor first about what’s comfortable and safe for you. A short, gentle walk or stretch can be a good place to start.

A medicine label has a small space and a lot to cover. It has to fit the same wording for every person who picks up that bottle, so it can't answer the questions only you have.

Quick label-reading tip for Talk About Your Medicines Month.

Acetaminophen doesn't always call itself that. On some labels you'll see "APAP" instead, so it's worth knowing the short form when you're scanning the box.

A few more things that don't get talked about enough:

• Acetaminophen eases pain and fever, but it isn't an anti-inflammatory. If swelling is the problem, ask us which option fits.

• Giving it to a child? Use the measuring tool that came with that exact product, and ask us about the right amount for their weight and age. Liquids come in different strengths.

• Keep it in its original container, away from heat, damp and little hands, and check the expiry date before you reach for it.

• Pregnant or breastfeeding? Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using any medicine.

It's easy to think of a pharmacist as the person who hands you a bag at the counter. In reality, a lot happens before that bag ever reaches you.

They're the ones catching drug interactions before they become a problem. Answering the question that got skipped over in a rushed doctor's visit. Helping someone juggling three or four medications figure out how to take them safely, together. And often, quietly doing a lot more than that too.

This American Pharmacists Month, it's worth pausing to notice the work that usually goes unnoticed.

There's a particular kind of waiting that happens around health. Not avoidance exactly, just a quiet "I'll deal with it later." The cough that's probably nothing. The blood pressure cuff you haven't touched since June. The question about a medication that's been sitting in the back of your mind for weeks.

None of these feel urgent enough to make an appointment over. But they don't need to. Sometimes they just need to be said out loud, to someone who knows enough to tell you whether it matters.

Fall is a good season for exactly that. Before winter makes everything feel like more of an effort, this is the easier window to catch the small things before they become bigger ones.
