It's Global Handwashing Day! 🧼

It sounds simple, but proper hand hygiene is still the single most effective way to reduce the spread of infectious organisms in a healthcare or dental setting. Not the newest equipment. Not the fanciest protocol. Clean hands, done right, every time.

The standard is specific for a reason:
→ Soap and water: minimum 20 seconds
→ Alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR): minimum 15 seconds

Today's a good excuse to slow down and make sure your team's habits actually match the standard.

OSHA is reconsidering several workplace safety rules, and a few of them may affect healthcare.

The proposals cover topics such as medical evaluations for N95S and loose-fitting PAPRs, the application of the General Duty Clause, and respiratory protection language for substances such as formaldehyde and ethylene oxide (both common in sterilization areas).

Nothing has changed yet. These proposals are working through the federal rulemaking process, and public hearings wrapped up in late August 2026. Until a final rule is published, your current OSHA obligations remain unchanged.

Hygienists spend more time close to a patient's mouth, and more time exposed to aerosol-generating procedures like ultrasonic scaling and air polishing, than almost anyone else on a dental team.

OSHA updated its Hazard Communication Standard to align with international standards, and the deadline for employers to comply is November 20, 2026. The good news? You don't have to rebuild your whole program.

Checklist:
✅ Chemical shipments? Check if SDSs have changed
✅ Update secondary container labels IF hazards changed
✅ Revise your written program to match
✅ Train staff on anything new!

If properly encrypted patient data is lost or accessed without authorization, and the encryption key stays secure, that data may be considered unreadable to whoever got it.

Training you can't understand isn't really training. If a team member's primary language isn't English, it's the employer's responsibility to ensure safety materials are understood, not just handed out.
