September is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Awareness Month.

PAD can reduce blood flow to the legs and feet, contributing to pain with walking, changes in temperature or sensation, and wounds that are slow to heal—or don’t heal at all.

At Indy Wound Center for Limb Preservation & Reconstruction, we believe identifying circulation problems early is an important part of preventing complications and preserving limbs.

Come see us for an evaluation. We can assess your wound and lower-extremity circulation and, when appropriate, connect you with our trusted Franciscan Vascular Surgery team for further vascular evaluation and treatment.

Wound care and vascular care work best together.

Preserving limbs. Restoring lives.

Another successful day in the OR working alongside our vascular surgery colleague, Dr. Cournoyer.

Limb salvage is truly a team effort. Combining vascular expertise with reconstructive foot and ankle surgery allows us to address both perfusion and the complex wounds, infections, and structural challenges that threaten a limb.

Grateful for great colleagues who share the same commitment to limb preservation.

One team. One goal: save limbs and preserve lives. 🦶💪

Proud to have Dr. Thomas Zumbaugh representing our team at the Philadelphia Advanced Limb Preservation (PALP) Meeting, sharing our work and experience in complex wound care and limb salvage.

Dr. Zumbaugh presented on multidisciplinary staged reconstruction of complex chronic wounds as well as innovative approaches to managing deep foot wounds when negative pressure therapy isn’t feasible.

It’s always rewarding to contribute to the exchange of ideas, techniques, and emerging solutions aimed at improving outcomes for patients facing complex wounds and limb-threatening conditions.

Great work, Dr. Zumbaugh! 👏

📚 New Publication | Staged Limb Salvage

We’re proud to share a newly published case series in the Journal of Chronic Wound Care Management & Research (CWCMR) highlighting the real-world application of staged limb salvage and advanced wound care strategies in complex lower-extremity wounds.

Across four challenging cases, a structured approach incorporating surgical debridement, advanced wound bed preparation, NPWT, dermal regeneration templates, and staged reconstruction resulted in complete wound closure and limb salvage in all four patients.

These cases reflect the mission of Indy Wound Center for Limb Preservation & Reconstruction: combining advanced wound care with thoughtful reconstructive strategies to preserve limbs, restore function, and achieve healing in complex, high-risk patients.

Congratulations to Neal K. Patel, DPM; Thomas A. Zumbaugh, DPM; Dr. Sasha Frade, PhD; and Zwelithini Tunyiswa, BA on the publication!

We are proud to share that Dr. Neal Patel was honored to serve as a co-author on the newly published consensus paper, “Recommendations to Inform National Coverage Determination (NCD) Development for Skin Substitutes in Hard-to-Heal Wounds,” published in the International Journal of Tissue Repair.

This landmark publication brought together many of the nation’s leading wound care physicians, surgeons, researchers, reimbursement experts, policy specialists, and industry leaders to help shape an evidence-based framework for the appropriate use of skin substitutes (CTP/CAMPs) in patients with hard-to-heal wounds.

Dr. Patel is deeply grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with such an accomplished group of experts dedicated to advancing wound care, limb preservation, and healthcare policy nationwide. It is a privilege to contribute to work that has the potential to help shape the future of advanced wound care and improve patient access to evidence-based therapies.

A special thank you to Anthony Kerr and Kernexus for their leadership, support, and for providing the opportunity to be part of this monumental publication. Additional thanks to Kelly Nickalls and the International Journal of Tissue Repair for their commitment to advancing wound care science and for helping bring this important work to publication.
