Did you know melatonin is a hormone? It’s true! This is why we do not recommend melatonin for children unless it has been specifically discussed with your child’s P*P or specialist AND there is a plan in place in regards to timing of administration, dose, and length of treatment. The goal should always be to use it temporarily.

This is a great reminder that just because something is over the counter does not mean it is inherently safe or a good option for your child. Melatonin can actually make sleep worse for some kids! It’s always best to discuss your child’s sleep concerns with a medical provider before considering melatonin.

Did you know that snoring in children is abnormal and warrants a discussion with your child’s primary care provider?

Sleep is such a foundational part of your child’s health, and any concerns about the quality or quantity of the sleep they are getting should be discussed.

Check out the slides above for some basics on sleep apnea in children.

A child’s sleep environment is very important for a good night’s sleep. A good rule of thumb is to make sure the room cool, dark, and quiet. If a child is too hot or cold, too bright, or too loud it can disturb their sleep quality. For most, a room temperature of 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. Keep the room dark and avoid using closet lights or overhead lights. Blackout curtains can help- especially in summer when it remains bright outside well into evening. A small nightlight is fine for any young kids with nighttime fears, but you should not be able to read a book and the nightlight shoukd@not be directly next to the crib or bed. Minimize awakenings from noise outside their room with a white noise machine if needed.

A proper sleep environment is the first step toward a good nights sleep!
