💙 The Need to Be Understood

Join us for the next session of A Safer Tomorrow on Thursday, August 27, from 4:00–5:00 p.m. ET.

Nursing can be deeply rewarding—but it can also feel isolating when the realities of the work are difficult to explain or when we feel unheard. This session will explore how communication, connection, and shared understanding play a critical role in supporting nurse wellbeing.

📚 Back-to-school season is here!

Let’s be honest… it’s really hard to get rid of those nursing school textbooks. You spent countless hours highlighting, studying, stressing, and probably crying over those pages. 😂 So naturally, they’ve earned a permanent spot on your bookshelf.

But before you spend a fortune on new textbooks, reach out to your nursing colleagues! Someone may have a copy sitting on their shelf that they’d be happy to pass along. You never know!

From textbooks to your nursing journey, ISNA is here to support you every step of the way. 💙

In Session 5, The Need to Be Understood, on August 27th, we will explore the role that connection, communication, and belonging play in nurse wellbeing. Awareness and coping strategies are essential, but resilience is strengthened when we feel heard, supported, and understood by others.

Many nurses carry the weight of the profession quietly, believing they should handle it alone. Yet meaningful connection is one of the most powerful protective factors we have. Join us as we explore why being understood matters and how authentic connections can help create a safer tomorrow for ourselves and our colleagues.

Mandatory Overtime Legislation Introduced. Imminently, the Nurse Overtime and Patient Safety Act will be introduced in the House and Senate by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Reps. Doris Matsui (D-CA) and Jen Kiggans (R-VA). This legislation will help protect patients and nurses by prohibiting healthcare employers from requiring nurses to work beyond their scheduled shifts, except in genuine emergencies and other limited circumstances. The legislation recognizes that fatigue from excessive work hours can compromise patient safety, contribute to medical errors, and drive nurse burnout and workforce shortages. Importantly, the bill does not prohibit nurses from voluntarily working overtime if they choose to do so. By establishing national safeguards against mandatory overtime, the legislation supports safer staffing practices, healthier work environments, and high-quality patient care.

🌟 Honoring Nursing History: Margaret E. Iddings

Before there was a century of nursing excellence in Indiana, there were pioneers who paved the way.

Margaret E. Iddings holds a special place in Indiana nursing history as the first graduate of the Flower Mission Training School for Nurses in Indianapolis in 1883—the beginning of professional nursing education in our state.

Her dedication and commitment helped lay the foundation for generations of nurses who would follow, shaping the nursing profession and advancing care throughout Indiana and beyond.

At ISNA, we honor the nurses who came before us and celebrate the legacy they created. Their courage, compassion, and leadership continue to inspire our work today.
