We welcome students young and old with a wide range of skill levels, and we are happy to accommodate unique interests. The Irvington Lyceum is an independent studio dedicated to the study of music and the humanities. We operate in the under-served market for piano instruction on the east side of Indianapolis, and we serve a need in the whole city of Indianapolis when it comes to extracurricular en

richment in the humanities. Originally, the Lyceum was the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle’s school in Athens. It is remembered in part for the comprehensive research of its students. Indeed, the academic disciplines we still study today, including logic, physics, biology, psychology, ethics, and aesthetics, closely track the classification of subjects invented by Aristotle. The original Lyceum’s remarkable entry into history is reflected in education and even language through history and even today. In France, for instance, many schools are known as lycées. Additionally, in the 19th century, the American Lyceum Movement consisted of informal educational associations aimed at facilitating broad lifelong learning. We call ourselves a lyceum not only because we love Aristotle, but also to emphasize the breadth of subjects available for study here, though in our case the emphasis is on music and the humanities. Likewise, as the American Lyceum Movement cherished the values of accessible, widespread education, we welcome learners of all ages and backgrounds to join us.
