"The Moments in Between"
By Star Meyer, VP- Chief Nursing Officer

Some people think nursing is defined by major clinical milestones — but what patients remember most are the moments in between.

Those are the moments when a nurse notices uncertainty and takes time to listen. When they encourage a patient to ask questions. When they create a welcoming environment where patients and families feel safe speaking up. Those seemingly small interactions build trust, and that trust makes care safer, stronger, and more effective.

When patients trust their nurses, they’re more engaged in their care. They’re more willing to ask questions, voice concerns and participate in decisions. That’s how nursing presence transforms outcomes — not just through skill, but through connection.

These moments may never appear in a medical record, but they are deeply felt. They stay with patients long after their care experience ends.

If a nurse’s presence helped you feel supported, understood or safe, we invite you to share a message of gratitude this Nurses Week. You may also choose to honor that care with a gift in the nurse’s name, helping support the nurses who are there for patients every step of the way.

Shared from Amanda Noth-Matchett, Chief Nursing Officer:
One of the things that makes nursing so unique is presence.

Nurses are there 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They bring together the entire care team around the patient’s needs while also forming strong relationships with patients and families simply because they are always there.

That presence gives nurses a front‑row seat to life’s most vulnerable moments. They lead with compassion — combining science, skill, and humanity — while noticing subtle changes others might miss. They see the full picture of a patient’s experience, not just a moment in time.

Through that consistency and connection, nurses build trust — and trust is what strengthens care.

If a nurse’s presence helped you feel supported, understood, or safe, we invite you to share a message of gratitude this Nurses Week. You may also choose to honor that care with a gift in the nurse’s name, helping support the nurses who are there for patients every step of the way.

Stories from Cindy Harrington, Chief Nursing Officer:

As a nurse leader, I see my role as a steward of this profession—protecting its integrity and ensuring nurses have the support they need to thrive. When we care for our caregivers, everything else improves: patient outcomes, trust, and the strength of our community.

Our nurses reflect the people they serve. Many live here, raise families here, and bring a deep understanding of our community into every patient interaction. Through empathy, honesty, and presence, they build trust one moment at a time.

That’s why gratitude—and investment—matter. When patients and families give back in honor of a nurse, they help create opportunities that might not otherwise be possible: advanced training, leadership development, and well-being support. It’s a powerful way to say, “Your work matters—and we’re grateful.”

From Amanda Noth-Matchett, Chief Nursing Officer:

What fills me with the greatest pride is hearing the stories of our nurses.

They are caring and compassionate — but they are also incredibly smart, innovative, and natural problem solvers. What makes these stories so powerful is how often they are shared quietly. When nurses are recognized for going above and beyond, they frequently respond with, “I was just doing my job,” or “That’s what any of us would have done.”

And often, that’s true.

Our nurses see a need and meet it — not because they’re told to, and not because they’re seeking recognition, but because it’s the right thing to do. They step in, create solutions, and rise to challenges instinctively. They do this work for their patients, for their teams, and for the nursing profession itself.

That quiet excellence — rooted in humility and purpose — is what makes nursing so extraordinary.

If a nurse quietly went above and beyond for you or someone you love, the month of May is a meaningful time to share your appreciation. Your note of thanks—or a gift made in their honor—helps shine light on the everyday excellence that defines nursing.

Clinical Trials at Indiana University Health

When someone you love is facing a serious illness, waiting isn’t an option. You want hope — now.

At Indiana University Health, clinical trials are making that possible.

Across Indiana, patients are gaining access to promising new therapies sooner — often years before they become widely available. From Alzheimer’s disease and ALS to mental health and beyond, clinical trials are advancing care for some of the most complex conditions affecting Hoosiers today.

This work is about more than research.
It’s about turning discovery into real options.
It’s about connecting patients to breakthroughs when they need them most.

“It gave me some excitement that something is coming around the corner,” shared one patient after learning about a clinical trial opportunity.

That’s the power of clinical trials — bringing hope closer.

Support clinical trials at IU Health and help bring breakthrough care — and hope — to more patients across Indiana.

"More Than a Role"
By Star Meyer, Chief Nursing Officer

Nurses Week is meaningful to me not because of the recognition itself, but because it gives us a moment to pause and reflect on what it truly means to be a nurse.

There is, of course, an operational side to my role as Chief Nursing Officer — ensuring excellence, recruiting and retaining top talent, and making sure nurses have the tools and growth opportunities they need to thrive. But on a deeper level, I see my responsibility as protecting and advancing nursing itself. Nursing excellence doesn’t happen by accident — it requires investment, support, and a commitment to the future of this profession.

I’m a registered nurse and an attorney, and while I value both paths, I am deeply proud to be a nurse. Nursing demands so much — professionally and personally. It requires skill, resilience and compassion, even when the work is hard and not always comfortable. Nurses do work that isn’t always easy, but it is always important.

Throughout the month of May, we invite you to recognize a nurse who made a difference in your care by sharing a message of gratitude. Many community members also choose to honor that nurse with a gift in their name — an investment that helps ensure nurses have the support they need to continue providing exceptional care.

One Year of Momentum, Hope Moving Sooner

When someone you love is facing a serious illness, time feels different.

Days stretch longer. Questions come faster than answers. And above all, there’s a quiet but urgent hope — for something more. More options. More progress. More time.

At Indiana University Health, clinical trials are helping meet that need — bringing promising new therapies to patients sooner across some of the most complex conditions affecting Hoosiers today, from cardiovascular disease and cancer to neurological and mental health disorders.

One year ago, on May 20 — National Clinical Trials Day — a transformative gift set a bold vision in motion. Today, that vision is becoming reality.

Through the IU Health Clinical Research Initiative, anchored within the Tobias–Lechleiter Institute for Clinical Innovation, a systemwide effort is accelerating discovery — strengthening partnerships, expanding access to trials and moving breakthroughs out of the lab and into the hands of patients faster.

And across Indiana, that momentum is already being felt — in deeply personal ways.

This is what progress looks like.
This is what hope, moving sooner, means.

Be part of what’s next: Support clinical trials at IU Health and help bring breakthrough care—and hope—to more patients across Indiana.

Stories by Cindy Herrington, Chief Nursing Officer:

Nurses are the constant in a patient’s journey. They are there in moments of uncertainty, healing, and hope — bridging the clinical and the human experience in ways that can’t be captured in a chart.

I’ve witnessed countless examples of this, including a nurse who stayed long after her shift ended to comfort a patient facing a difficult diagnosis alone. She offered reassurance, answered questions, and simply made sure the patient wasn’t by themselves. That moment didn’t show up in a metric — but it changed everything.

If a nurse stood beside you or someone you love during a vulnerable time, your words of thanks can make a powerful difference. Nurses Week is a meaningful time to share that gratitude. Some choose to honor that care with a philanthropic gift, helping us invest in education, well-being, and the future of nursing at IU Health Bloomington.
