Strength training is one of the most powerful tools we have to help older adults maintain strength, mobility, confidence, and independence.
This recent survey of exercise professionals found that most resistance-training programs for older adults use practical, individualized approaches: approximately two sessions per week, 4โ6 exercises per session, and effort-based intensity guidance such as RPE. The message is clear: effective exercise does not need to be overly complicatedโbut it does need to be safe, progressive, and tailored to the individual.
For Clinical Exercise Physiologists, this is where our expertise matters. We are uniquely positioned to translate evidence into real-world programs for older adults managing chronic conditions, changing physical abilities, and concerns about injury.
