🧠 New research is taking a closer look at prenatal substance exposure and early brain development.

The NIH-funded HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study is following thousands of children across the U.S. to better understand how prenatal exposure to substances—including alcohol, opioids, cannabis, and to***co—along with social and environmental factors, may influence brain and child development.
Researchers hope these findings will help identify risks, protective factors, and potential opportunities for earlier support and intervention.

💙 FASD impacts the whole family—including siblings.

New research is shining a light on an often-overlooked perspective: the experiences of siblings of people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
Siblings may take on added responsibilities or sometimes feel their own needs are overlooked, but they also describe developing strengths like empathy, resilience, patience, and advocacy.
Recognizing and supporting siblings is an important part of supporting the whole family.

🍼 Breast milk provides important nutrition and health benefits for babies—but it’s also important to understand that substances a breastfeeding parent uses may expose their baby through breast milk.

Alcohol, ni****ne, cannabis, illicit drugs, and certain medications can pass into breast milk or otherwise affect a breastfeeding infant. The effects and recommendations vary depending on the substance, which is why avoiding nonmedical substance use and talking openly with a healthcare provider is so important.

đź’™ If you are pregnant or breastfeeding and struggling with substance use, support is available. Reach out to a healthcare provider or connect with a trusted treatment and support resource.
