Lois Brewer Childress, age 84 of Kermit, WV went home to be with the Lord at her home on Oct 10, 2026. She passed away peacefully with family at her side. She was born in Mingo County on March 4, 1942, to late Joe Messer and Etta Salmon. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by the father of her children, Paul Brewer and her husband, James T. Childress, and sisters, Sylvia Newsome, Peggy Marcum, Patricia Stacy, Dorothy Messer and Brenda Messer; brothers, Kelly Messer, Clinton Messer, Clifford(Blondie) Messer, Jody Messer and Kent/Beth Brewer/son Loretta Brewer/daughter grandchildren Breanna Brewer, BJ Robinson, and Lucas Thomas Little.

Lois is survived by her sister, Connie Rose; children, Paula/Kenny Grady, Donna/Ronnie Pinson, Brent/Robertia Brewer Selwyn Glenn/Tina Brewer; grandchildren, Janelle Newsome, Joshua Wilkerson, Nikki Vance, Justin Pinson, Ashley Muncy, April Muncy, Jamey Little, Sasha Little, Brittany Brewer, Jonathan Brewer, Tiffany Chester, Brittany Muncy, Jeremy Varney, Andy Clark, Tyler Brewer, Cory Brewer and Austin Brewer. She is also survived by special nieces, Jeaneen Williamson and Crystal Wright. As well as host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In keeping with her wishes, she will be cremated. A celebration of life will take place at 2:00pm, Saturday, October 24, 2026 at the Kermit United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, KY.

Carrie Sue Wilson, age 77, of Lancaster, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2026, at OSU Medical Center in Columbus. Carrie was born in Crum, WV to Howard and Evelene Spaulding on March 15, 1949. Carrie had formerly attended the Baptist Church in Marengo, Ohio. She loved gardening and won many blue ribbons at the County Fair over the years. Carrie Sue was an outstanding cook, who loved to make pies, cakes and pumpkin rolls. Although she was never blessed with children, she treated her pets as though they were her children.

She is survived by her sisters, Betty Mechling, of Amanda, Barbara Kegler, of Pataskala, and Bessie Black, of Marengo; brothers, William (Daphene) Spaulding, of Crum, WV, Flem (Stella) Spaulding, of Hocking Hills, and Larry (Truneda) Spaulding, of Vinton; many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Joyce Varney; and brother, Otis Spaulding.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at Spaulding Family Cemetery in Crum, WV. Arrangements are under the direction of the Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, KY.

Jill Horn of Lexington, Kentucky, formerly of Inez, Kentucky, was born on April 5, 1975, to Dottie and Beuford Horn. She was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.

Jill graduated from Sheldon Clark High School in 1993 and went on to graduate from Eastern Kentucky University. She pursued a career in pharmaceutical sales.

She had a bright and vibrant spirit that could light up any room. She treasured her many friends and family and brought joy to all fortunate to know her.

Jill was preceded in death by her beloved younger brother, Justin, with whom she shared a special bond. Those left to cherish her memory include her parents, Dottie and Beuford; her niece, Kyla (Brady) Preece; her great-nephew, Justin Kit; aunts, uncles, cousins, and many extended family members and dear friends.

Jill’s memory will live on through the countless lives she touched and the love she shared with those around her. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, who will forever hold her close in their hearts.

Visitation will be held Monday, October 12, 2026 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Callaham Funeral Home in Inez, Kentucky. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at Inez Freewill Baptist Church in Inez, Kentucky at 1:00pm. Betty Ann Sartin Lucas, 72, of Huntington, West Virginia, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Lincoln Healthcare Center. She was born August 3, 1954, in Mingo County, West Virginia, to the late Earl Sartin and Virgie Belcher. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Argonia Lucas; one daughter, Linda Gail Sartin; and two siblings, Jennings Sartin and Alene Sartin.

Betty is survived by her children, Curtis Sartin, Sandra Sartin, Brenda Sartin, Argonia Lucas II, Arzolia Lucas, Brookie Lucas, Lora Lucas, Stephanie Lucas, Betty Lucas, Marsha Lucas, Melissa Lucas, and Felicia Lucas; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Melvin Sartin, Madge Sartin, Geraldine Sartin, Nellie Bragg, and Peggy Sartin; along with many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at the Warfield Church of God in Warfield,KY , with Anthony Sartin officiating. Burial will follow at Sartin & Brewer Cemetery in Kermit, West Virginia. Angela Lee Maynard, of Warfield, Kentucky, passed away on October 3, 2026, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. She was born on March 30, 1978, in Williamson, West Virginia to Judy Chaffin of Georgetown, KY and Jack Harmon of Lovely, Kentucky.

Angela is survived by her parents; her husband, Clinton Maynard of Warfield, KY; her children, Tawny Alley of Kermit, WV and Kaiyah Harmon of Warfield, KY; and her grandchildren, Maverick Smith and Scarlet Alley. She is also survived by her siblings, Lori Harmon, Eric Chaffin and Pansy Muncy.

Angela is preceded in death by one daughter, Tianna Maynard.

In keeping with Angela’s wishes, she will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date, with details to be announced. Arrangements are under the direction of the Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, KY.

Jewell Newsome Sammons, 81, of Marrowbone Creek, Kermit, WV, took her heavenly flight Sunday, September 13th, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, WV. Born July 25, 1945, to the late Floyd and Louise (Rose) Newsome, besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Violet (Pody) Brewer, Delphia Fraker, Nettie Newsome, Irene Pauley and Joan Maynard, and nephew Brian Fraker and great-niece, Chandra Crigger Kirk.

Jewell is survived by her loving daughter, Denise Sammons of Kermit, WV, and her sisters Garnet Rigsby, China Grove, NC, and Faye Fletcher (Carlos) of Inez, KY, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Jewell was a loving mother, sister and aunt. She loved her family with her whole heart. She will always be remembered as our precious Jewell.

David Ray Mills, 46, of Louisa, Kentucky, formerly of Tomahawk, KY, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2026, in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was born on November 25, 1979, in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, the son of Hobert Mills and the late Dolly Cornette Mills.

David had held various jobs throughout his life and, at the time of his passing, was taking online classes with the goal of becoming a counselor. He wanted to use his experiences to help others who were facing struggles and issues that were close to his heart. His desire to make a difference in the lives of others was something that meant a great deal to him.

David is survived by his father and stepmother, Hobert and Janet Mills of Tomahawk, KY.; his sister, Tracy (Wally) Bower of Kenova, West Virginia; his nephews, Brayden Taylor Bower and Brycen Louis Bower; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will fondly remember him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dolly Cornette Mills; paternal grandparents, Vivian and Louis Mills; and maternal grandparents, Lillian and Wilburn Cornette.

Funeral services will be held at the Callaham Funeral Home in Inez, KY on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at 1:00pm with Kevin Collins officiating. Burial will follow at the Mills Cemetery in Tomahawk, KY. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Friday from 6:00-9:00pm. Frances P. Preece, 99, formerly of Kermit, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2026. She was a resident at the Martin County Nursing Home in Inez, Kentucky. Born November 4, 1926, to Floyd and Ella Parsley, she was one of seven siblings.

Frances is survived by her son, Boyce “Bub” Preece II; and two grandchildren, Ryan Preece of Lexington, Kentucky, and Rebecca Preece of Richmond, Kentucky. She is also survived by one sister, Margaret Witt of Virginia; and her longtime friend, Gail Ruble of Kermit.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Rella Preece; two brothers; three sisters; and her longtime friend, E.P. “Biss” Stepp.

Frances was retired from the Mingo County school system and was a cherished member of the Kermit United Methodist Church. She loved her family dearly and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Friends may visit at the Warfield Chapel of the Callaham Funeral Home in Warfield, KY on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 from 7:00-9:00pm with special services at 7:30pm with Ronnie Pinson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, KY.

Tayten Brian Drake Messer, of Lovely, KY, tragically passed away on August 28th, 2026 at the age of 19 years old.

Tayten was born on July 1st, 2007, to Ladonna and Tiney Messer. After Tayten graduated from Martin County High School in 2025, he went on to study Diesel Technology at Big Sandy Community and Technical College. Beyond his studies, Tayten enjoyed racing, working as a Mechanic, spending time with family and friends, driving around with his girlfriend, and playing with his animals. He was truly one of the most loved and special people in this world. He had a big heart and anyone who met him was lucky to have known him and experienced his love.

In 2020, Tayten met the love of his life, Keyera Maynard, whom he planned on marrying one day.

Tayten is survived by his parents, Donna and Tiney Messer; sisters Brooke (Dylan) James and Candice Messer (Jarred Blair); niece and nephews Dolly Hinkle, Cooper James, and Elijah Blair; maternal grandparents Judy and Mose Newsome; paternal grandmother Carol Marcum; girlfriend Keyera Maynard; and his hamster, Jethro.

Funeral services will be at 2:00pm, Thursday, September 3, 2026 at the Southside Freewill Baptist Church in Paintsville, KY with Tim York officiating. Friends may visit at the church on Tuesday from 6:00-9:00pm and Wednesday from 4:00-9:00pm. Arrangements are under the direction of the Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, KY.
