🔥 When neuropathy starts interfering with sleep, comfort, or daily life, the problem may be changing.

In Stage 3, symptoms don’t just become constant. They may become more intense.

Some people experience:

⚡ Stronger electrical sensations
🔥 More severe burning
🛏️ Feet that hurt when the bedsheets touch them
😴 Sleep disruption
🦶 Increasing numbness
🚶 Changes in walking or confidence

And here’s something important:

Less pain does not always mean the nerves are improving.

If burning or tingling is being replaced by increasing numbness, the nerves may actually be sending less sensory information back to the brain.

That sensory information helps you feel pressure, vibration, temperature, and where your feet are positioned.

This is where neuropathy may start affecting more than comfort.

It may start affecting how you move.

👣 What happens when the tingling that used to come and go stops going away?

That’s what we describe as Stage 2 in our 4 Stages of Neuropathy series.

At this point, symptoms may start becoming part of everyday life.

You may notice:

⚡ Constant tingling
🔥 Burning that happens more frequently
🦶 Persistent numbness
🧦 A thick, tight, or “sock-like” feeling in the feet
❄️ Feet that feel unusually cold

Damaged sensory nerves can send too much information, too little information, or distorted information.

That’s why one person may experience burning pain while another person feels very little pain but significant numbness.

The important thing is that constant symptoms are different from occasional symptoms.

Your nerves are giving you information every day.

👉 Follow us for Part 3, where we explain what happens when neuropathy symptoms begin to intensify.

⚠️ Stage 1 neuropathy is often the easiest stage to ignore.

Why?

Because the symptoms may disappear.

Maybe your toes tingle for a little while and then feel normal again.

Maybe your feet burn occasionally at night.

Maybe you notice numbness, pins and needles, or a strange sensation that only happens once in a while.

Because it isn’t constant, it’s easy to blame it on shoes, circulation, age, or sleeping wrong.

But intermittent symptoms can still be a sign that the sensory nerves are not communicating normally.

Neuropathy often starts quietly.

It can whisper before it shouts.

This is Part 1 of our 4 Stages of Neuropathy series.

👉 Follow us for Stage 2, where those occasional symptoms start becoming much harder to ignore.

👣 Neuropathy doesn’t usually become severe overnight. It often changes in stages.

A little tingling here.
Some numbness there.
Burning that only happens at night.
Then, over time, symptoms may become more constant and start affecting balance or daily life.

In this new 4 Stages of Neuropathy series, Dr. Ryan is breaking down the progression we often use to help patients better understand what their symptoms may be telling them.

We’ll cover:

1️⃣ Symptoms that come and go
2️⃣ Symptoms that become constant
3️⃣ Symptoms that intensify
4️⃣ Changes in balance, walking, and function

Not everyone progresses the exact same way, but understanding the pattern can help you recognize changes earlier.

🧠 You can consume vitamin B12 and still have trouble absorbing enough of it to support your nerves.

B12 absorption is a multi-step process:

1️⃣ Stomach acid helps release B12 from food
2️⃣ B12 attaches to a substance called intrinsic factor
3️⃣ It is absorbed in the final portion of the small intestine

A problem anywhere along this pathway may reduce absorption.

Risk factors can include certain digestive conditions, stomach or intestinal surgery, pernicious anemia and long-term use of some medications.

A significant B12 deficiency may contribute to:

⚡ Tingling
🦶 Numbness
💪 Weakness
⚠️ Balance problems

This does not mean everyone with neuropathy should start taking B12 without proper evaluation. It means nutrient levels and absorption can be important pieces of the puzzle.

👣 Why does neuropathy usually begin in the toes and slowly move upward?

Many common forms of peripheral neuropathy are length-dependent. That means the longest nerves are often affected first.

Some nerve fibers travel from near your spinal cord all the way down to your toes. Because they’re so long, they require a large amount of energy and cellular support to stay healthy.

When nerves are exposed to stress from factors such as elevated blood sugar, certain toxins, inflammation or nutrient deficiencies, the endings farthest away may begin struggling first.

That’s why symptoms often:

1️⃣ Begin in the toes
2️⃣ Spread across the feet
3️⃣ Gradually move up the legs

This is sometimes called a stocking pattern.

🌙 Do you feel much more unsteady when the lights are off?

There’s a neurological reason this can happen.

Your brain uses three main systems to maintain balance:

👀 Vision
👂 Your inner-ear balance system
👣 Position information from your feet, muscles and joints

That last system is called proprioception.

When neuropathy reduces the information traveling from your feet to your brain, your eyes may help compensate during the day. But once the lights go out, that visual support disappears—and the balance problem can become much more noticeable.

This is why some people struggle when walking through a dark hallway or getting up to use the bathroom at night.

Does your balance get worse in the dark? Let us know below. 👇

🤯 Two people can both have neuropathy but experience completely different symptoms.

One reason is that neuropathy can affect different types of nerve fibers.

🔥 Small nerve fibers help detect pain and temperature. Damage may cause burning, stabbing pain, electric sensations or unusual sensitivity to heat and cold.

👣 Large nerve fibers carry information about vibration, pressure and joint position. Damage may cause numbness, poor coordination and balance problems.

This is why one person may experience intense burning pain while another has very little pain but struggles to feel the ground or stay balanced.

Neuropathy is not the same for everyone.
