How do we fully experience all of life, rather than just endure it? Without knowing it, I made endurance a way of life for years, putting up with almost anything. When we endure life, we lose joy.

In yesterday’s Wisdom Wednesday we explore numbing: how, why, the costs, and the way back to more feeling. More feeling, less thinking!

What happens when we stop feeling our lives? Why do we do it? What does it cost us?

Today in this month’s wisdom Wednesday we talk about the disconnect and the reconnect.

i’m excited to share my Big a-ha from researching this… Around endurance. It’s not what you might think.

10 weeks. 10 tasks. Living a more Examined and Embodied Life series starts tomorrow.

Tomorrow we start at 9am with the theme “It’s time to grow up” and explore how fear and lethargy hold us back.

Each week we will take a psychological theme from Dr James Hollis’s book “Living an Examined Life”, embody it using the practices of yoga and at the end of class you will be sent home with a contemplative question to chew on.

Join live in studio, live on zoom, or complete the classes on your own when the time works for you.

Retreat allows the body the rest, regeneration, and healing it needs to return to greater calm, responsiveness, and connection to self. This particular retreat with Dr. Betsy will explore the deep link between mind and body via the Kosha Model and how when we attend to the body, we open the pathways to emotional integration and mental fluidity.

In this deeply healing week, you will be guided through asana, breathwork, somatic meditations, embodied journeying, inner contemplation, and group inquiry to meet the constrictions in the body and work directly with sensation and breath rather then being stuck in the mind’s tendency to analyze, repress, and numb. Dr. Betsy works from a trauma-informed perspective and creates spaces and opportunities for your body and mind to naturally heal and integrate in its ideal timing.

I am definitely in the second half of my life and it seems I am still growing up! More aspects of life to mature into.

Have felt inspired by the prospect of continuing to address unfinished business and take responsibility for my life.

This is at the heart of an upcoming 10-week yoga series I am teaching starting September 1 based on the work of Dr James Hollis, a Jungian analyst, who wrote “Living an Examined Life”.

We are going to embody the following 10 psychological tasks in our yoga practice:

Week 1: IT’s time to Grow Up
Week 2: Let Go of the Old
Week 3: Recover Personal Authority
Week 4: Vow to Get Unstuck
Week 5: Come Back To Your Task
Week 6: Choose the Path of Enlargement
Week 7: What Gift Have You Been Withholding?
Week 8: See Your Destructive Patterns
Week 9: What is the Bigger Picture for You?
Week 10: Permission to Be Who You Are

Join live in studio Tuesdays @ 9. Join live online via zoom. Or watch replays later when it works for your schedule.

Details for how to “Live an Examined (and Embodied) Life” yoga series that starts 9/1 in link in bio.

Loved the Tend Her Wild podcast conversation we had with Erica Miller of inSpirit healing arts on shamanism and healing.

I have been receiving mind blowing healing work from Erica in the last 6 years and have noticed our work get even more potent since she began studying shamanism. 🍀🌿🌳

This is a first on the podcast - Erica brought her drum and guided us in a short journey to meet our inner wild woman! Was amazing - highly recommend listening and doing the journey that starts about 40 minutes in.

Fuel with Compassion & Care

Wednesday was a first for me because my 20-year-old son Pieter joined me on Wisdom Wednesday. I cannot fully express how powerful this was - not only the actual conversation we had live in front of 65 people, but also all the conversations and growth that led up to this moment.

We shared a story about golf. Shame. Perfectionism. Self-criticism. Annoyance. Mistakes. Vulnerability. Connection. Self-compassion. New perspectives.

Shame is something Pieter and I both experience. Shame is a universal emotion, and is directly linked to our belief about how others are judging us. It collapses us inward in embarrassment, and has been called a “soul eating emotion”. We all know it (unless you are a sociopath and have no capacity to feel shame), and most of us keep what we are ashamed of in secrecy and inner judgment.

My son and I learned the power of speaking into our shame, and then applying the balm of self-compassion. We both learned how fueling ourselves with threat and fear is far less effective than fueling with kindness and care.

The psychological data also supports this - people who are self-compassionate actually perform at higher levels, blowing the myth out of the water that if you are mentally tough with yourself that you somehow will do better.

We ended Wisdom Wednesday with a brief embodiment exercise that utilized the 3 components of self compassion (mindfulness, kindness, and shared humanity) and the power of the “I am” process that I learned from my meditation teacher Deepak Chopra.

Pieter commented to me later that the exercise instantly calmed him, and he may have a new practice to do prior to golf tournaments. If you want to try the exercise, you can find it at 43:00 in the video below.

And if you want more of this - I hold Wisdom Wednesday the first Wednesday of each month. It’s always free. A listener requested we explore numbing as a way to self-soothe next month. If you have a topic you’d like me to speak about from the perspective of the integration of modern psychology and ancient contemplative practice, let me know.

Shame is one of the most universal—and often hidden—human experiences, shaping the way we see ourselves, our relationships, and our place in the world.

In this month’s Wisdom Wednesday, we’ll explore the intersection of modern psychology, self-compassion research, and the wisdom of yoga to understand how shame develops and why it can feel so difficult to release.
Betsy’s son Pieter is going to join for part of the conversation as he navigates this dance between shame and achievement as a 20-year-old in a complex culture.

This month’s topic was brought forward by a listener wanting a deeper understanding of shame and also emerged in a conversation Betsy was having with Pieter after a particularly hard golf tournament he competed in.

Whether you’re navigating your own healing journey or supporting others, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of how to meet shame with awareness, compassion, and the liberating wisdom of yoga.

During this free webinar you will learn:
Why shame is a “self-conscious” emotion and the high rates of it in the population.
The 4 antidotes to shame.
The faulty belief that most of us have that perpetuates shame.

Why self-compassion is not a “soft” response to failure, but may be the best way to build resilience, persistence, and help sustain motivation.
How the ancient wisdom of yoga reveals the deeper underlying reason for our shame, and the tools that free us from it.

This free webinar is Wednesday, August 12th at noon. If you cannot make it live, still register at link in bio and we will send you a recording.
