The Integrative & Functional Medicine Fellowship at the UC Irvine Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute (.institute) is an innovative fellowship designed for the realities of clinical complexity.

Healthcare is evolving, and clinicians are increasingly called to manage complexity, chronic disease, and root causes, often within systems not designed for this level of care. This fellowship provides rigorous, evidence-informed training that equips MDs, DOs, NPs and PAs to integrate whole-person, functional, and integrative approaches into everyday clinical practice. Graduates develop stronger clinical reasoning, expanded therapeutic strategies, and the confidence to deliver personalized care that improves patient outcomes and restores meaning in their work.

There is a critical education gap for clinicians in understanding the critical role of nutrition in preventing and treating disease. That's why our fellowship is prioritizing nutritional education.

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in achieving optimal health, either supporting or hindering an individual’s efforts. With Ashley Koff, RD, who brings over two decades of experience as a practitioner/educator/author/consultant, our fellows delve into the science of nutrition with a focus on personalization. They explore the vital roles of micronutrients and macronutrients, examine various therapeutic diets, and learn how to integrate nutrigenomic testing into their practice. They also gain expertise in conducting integrative nutrition assessments, among other key skills.

Are you ready to bring these tools to your practice and help enhance your patients' well-being? Learn more and apply here: https://ssihi.uci.edu/ifmf

One fellowship. Two leading educational pathways.

For years, clinicians interested in both integrative medicine and functional medicine have had to pursue separate educational pathways. The Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute at University of California, Irvine is the first major academic medical center to bring them together in a single fellowship.

The Samueli Institute now offers a unified two-year fellowship that enables qualified clinicians to pursue eligibility for board certification by the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM) and the Functional Medicine Certified Professional–Medical (FMCP-M) credential.

Led by founding director Tieraona Low Dog, MD, the hybrid Integrative & Functional Medicine Fellowship combines online learning, in-person intensives, and mentorship for clinicians seeking advanced training in personalized, preventive, and whole-person care.

Applications are now open for Fall 2026. Visit us here for more details: https://ssihi.uci.edu/ifmf

Two of our faculty members are meeting a critical and often overlooked need in women’s health!

With fertility challenges on the rise, there is immense emotional and physical stress on families. But the solution is about more than just helping someone get pregnant. The Integrative Preconception Care Program at the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute is about creating a stronger foundation for healthy pregnancies, improved maternal health outcomes, and thriving children for future generations to come.

Karen Lindsay, PhD, RDN, and Lilian Au, ND, MPH, launched the program to provide whole-person care to individuals and couples looking to lay the healthiest possible foundation before pregnancy. It follows the success of their pilot cohorts in 2024 and 2025, in which they observed decreased stress, improved food skills and mindfulness, increased diet quality scores, and corrected nutrient deficiencies in patients. These observations indicate that a whole-person, pre-pregnancy intervention has the potential to provide significant health benefits for people wanting to start a family.

This is an exciting example of how integrative health can help fill important gaps in care, especially for women.

The Integrative Preconception Care Program is currently accepting patients at the Samueli Institute. See more information here: https://ssihiconcierge.plusamenities.com/pages/integrative-preconception-care
