A retinal detachment is a medical emergency that occurs when the retina pulls away from its normal position. The retina is responsible for converting light into neural signals and sending them to the brain, allowing us to see. When it detaches, it gets separated from the underlying layer of blood vessels that supply it with crucial oxygen and nutrients. This disruption usually triggers symptoms like a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a dark curtain-like shadow moving across the field of vision. If left untreated, the longer the retina remains detached, the greater the risk of permanent, severe vision loss in the affected eye.

One highly effective surgical treatment for this condition is a vitrectomy. During this procedure, an ophthalmologist makes tiny incisions in the eye to clear away the vitreous humor which may be pulling on the retina. The surgeon uses a specialized tool called a vitreous cutter to remove the gel, alleviating that internal tugging and tension. Once the gel is removed, the surgeon can seal the retinal tear using a laser or a freezing probe, and then injects a gas or silicone oil bubble into the eye. This bubble acts as a temporary internal bandage, flattening and holding the retina firmly back against the wall of the eye so it can reattach and heal properly
