There has been a lot of discussion lately about the negative impact of gluten (or wheat products) on our general health. Gluten is the component of wheat that makes bread dough elastic and helps bread rise. It is also is found in a multitude of foods and even cosmetics. Unfortunately, most cosmetics do not specify it as an ingredient. The book Wheat Belly was published several years ago claiming that wheat impacts us negatively in a multitude of ways, including our skin.

The Mayo Clinic claims that 1 in 8 of us have an allergy to wheat. However, beyond gluten intolerance, a wheat allergy is hard to pinpoint. Dr William Davis claims that easily 80% of us have some type of reaction to wheat. He says that eliminating it from your diet is the only way to determine if you have an allergy. He has had patients with flushed red faces and puffy bags under their eyes eliminate wheat and see massive improvements in weeks. He hasn’t done a study but has seen the improvement multiple times with his patients.

Let me know if you like this information and your own results or experiments with a gluten free diet. Do you think gluten intolerance and the health problems associated with it are fact or fiction?

A lot of us thought that that bad skin problems were due to raging hormones during the teenage years, but adults struggle with skin problems as well. Eczema, rosacea, dry skin and recurrent rashes are common skin conditions in adults.

A study published in Cutaneous Medicine for the Practitioner revealed that the consumption of nuts, fried foods and potato chips increases the risk of acne. The study also showed a strong association between acne and a diet rich in high glycemic foods such as white breads, pasta, cakes etc. and an increase in refined sugar consumption.
It may help your skin problems disappear by cleaning up your diet and avoiding the triggers. Not all food sensitivities show up in blood or skin tests, so the best way to figure out which foods are bothering you is to banish them from your diet for a period of time, usually three to six weeks, and see if you notice a difference in your skin.

Along with eliminating trigger foods it is very important to get the right vitamins in your diet. A recent study published by the National Institutes of Health suggests that acne-sufferers tend to have lower levels of zinc and vitamins A and E compared to those with clear skin. Squash, carrots, dark leafy greens and sweet potatoes are great sources of vitamin A. And olives, almonds, sunflower seeds and dried apricots can provide vitamin E, while grass-fed beef, spinach and pumpkin seeds all contain zinc.

Benefits of Vitamin C for Skin

Topical Vitamin C Protects, Promotes, Repairs Skin

Its been proven that topical Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help our damaged skin to recover. It can also protect it from future damage. Nutritional antioxidants, like the Vitamin C in oranges for example, naturally protect our skin from photo-aging but we most of us don’t get the daily recommended amount. Topical Vitamin C can produce higher concentrations of Vitamin C in the skin and once absorbed, they aren't washed or rubbed off.

Topical Vitamin C Must be Stable and Active to Pe*****te the layers of Skin

It is important to stress here that only topical Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic acid) that is stable, active and able to be absorbed, and remain stable throughout the life of the product once it is opened, is effective. It must be able to pe*****te to be effective at the cellular level. Look for products that are in opaque bottles. Additionally, micro-encapsulated vitamin keep the vitamin c stable until it is absorbed into the skin.

Tip # 6 of 7

Give Your Skin Care Products a Chance to Work

A big mistake many people make in the skin care department is changing products every week hoping to find ageless miracles in a jar. Most products will take about three months to show results. The life of your skin is 28 days and that of your collagen is even longer (about 60 to 90 days), so you need to give products time to work. Which anti-aging products will give you the most benefits of more radiant skin? Research has shown that anyone who can tolerate a retinol should be using one for treating redness and sun damage on sensitive skin. People with acne should look to salicylic acid.

Exercise Regularly
A sedentary lifestyle can add years and signs of premature aging to your face. Working out improves circulation and blood flow, which gives skin a healthy glow. When you exercise and turn pink, it’s the sign that the blood vessels in your skin are dilating and washing the area with nutrient and oxygen rich blood. Also, some research suggests that exercise actually helps skin repair itself and may even protect against skin cancer. So get 30 minutes of aerobic activity three or four times a week and your skin will thank you for it.

Not Getting Enough Sleep

Who can say they ever get enough sleep? Unfortunately we all might need to make it more of a priority since the worst thing you can do to your skin, besides skipping sunscreen, is deprive yourself of sleep. There is a reason they call it beauty rest. When you're sleeping, your body changes gears (so to say), where our energy is shifted from our core and given to the rest of the body to rejuvenate.

Skin and Aging Tip 3 of 7

Ignoring the Skin Around Your Eyes

Huge sunglasses aren't only for celebrities. You should be wearing them to help prevent sun damage around your eyes since eyelids are one of the most common places to find skin cancer. You can even get melanoma in your eyes. Use baby sunscreens which are tear-free around your delicate eye skin, but sunglasses and large hats will provide great skin and eye protection. The sunglasses you use should have 95% to 100 % UV Protection.

Part 2 of my 7 part Get Healthy

Make sure you wear Sunscreen

According to most Dermatologists, ninety percent of our wrinkles are from the sun, so SPF is the best anti-aging secret available. The biggest mistake most people make is not using enough sunscreen and not reapplying it frequently enough. Use enough sunscreen to fill a small glass, and apply it every 40 to 80 minutes when you're in the sun, says Ellen Marmur, MD. On days when you're only outdoors before work and on your lunch hour, you still need protection. Follow this simple and you'll be the 90-year-old with perfect skin. Daily exposure adds up so don’t think you can skip it, The sunscreen you apply in the morning will get you to work, but it won't protect you on your lunch hour.
