This Labor Day let's reflect on the importance of teaching work readiness skills to people with developmental disabilities as they are often unemployed or underemployed at a much higher rate than their peers without disabilities. By providing them with the necessary skills and support, we can empower them to secure meaningful employment opportunities and contribute to society. Let's work together to create a more inclusive and diverse workforce! 🌟

This Sunday is National Read a Book Day and we have some fun suggestions to get - and keep - your kids reading! Encourage interaction and engagement with your little ones with pop-up books, books with buttons that make sounds, and books with touch-and-feel pictures. Older children will like stories where they can join in like Mo Willems' Pigeon series and Eric Litwin's Pete the Cat books. Whatever books you and your child choose, take time each day to read and explore!

As summer break begins to wind down, it's the perfect time to soak up a few more family memories while gently preparing for the transition back to school - which can be tough for any kid...or grownup!

Here are a few fun and helpful ideas to end the season on a positive note and make back-to-school a breeze:
🌳 Visit a local park or nature trail.
💦 Have one last backyard water day - sensory fun is for everyone!
🎨 Create summer-themed crafts or something that can be used to keep your student organized like a pencil holder or folder for art projects.
🍦 Let your child choose a special "last day of summer" treat and help choose healthy snacks for school.
📖 Read books together and talk about the upcoming school year - social stories are the best!
📝 Practice morning and bedtime routines a little earlier each day.
🎒 Organize school supplies together and let your child personalize their backpack.
😊 Talk about what they're excited about—and any worries they may have—to help build confidence for the first day.

For many children, especially those with autism, small changes to routines can make a big difference. Gradually easing back into school schedules and talking through expectations can help reduce anxiety and make the transition feel more predictable.

💙 You Don't Have to Navigate the Autism Journey Alone
One of the most valuable things you can do as a parent or caregiver is build a support network. Whether you're newly navigating an autism diagnosis or looking for additional resources, there are so many places to find guidance, encouragement, and community.

Here are a few places to start your search:
✨ Local autism organizations and nonprofits
✨ National autism advocacy and support organizations
✨ Disability service providers
✨ Parent support groups in your community
✨ Facebook groups for autism parents, caregivers, and local special needs families
✨ School district parent resource centers and special education departments
✨ Community recreation programs and sensory-friendly events
✨ Your child's therapy team—they often know about local resources you may not find online

Every family's journey is different, and sometimes the best recommendations come from other parents who have been there.

👇 What are your favorite autism or special needs resources? Share a link, Facebook group, organization, or local support program in the comments to help other families discover valuable support. 💙

📚✨ A new school year is just around the corner, and a little preparation now can make those first few weeks much smoother.
For many children with autism, the transition back to school brings a mix of excitement, change, and uncertainty. Creating familiar routines and preparing ahead of time can help reduce anxiety and build confidence before the first day.
Here are a few simple ways to get ready:
🌅 Start shifting bedtime and morning routines now so everyone can adjust to the school schedule.
🍎 Prep lunches, lay out clothes, and pack backpacks the night before to create calmer, less stressful mornings.
🖼️ Use photos of teachers, classrooms, or the school building to create visual schedules or social stories that help your child know what to expect.
📝 Talk through daily routines, practice school-day expectations, and celebrate small wins along the way.
Every child experiences the back-to-school transition differently, so focus on the strategies that work best for your family. With patience, preparation, and the right support, children with autism can begin the school year feeling more confident and ready to learn.

💙 Here's to a school year filled with growth, new friendships, and plenty of reasons to celebrate!
