More nitrogen at grain fill doesn't always mean more yield. Corn can become a luxury feeder — pulling in extra nitrogen and converting it to protein in the kernel, with nothing to show for it in the yield monitor.

Last week, James Herrick walked a seed corn field in central Nebraska for another Field Recon: when do you stop irrigating?

The field had just gotten an inch of rain, and he breaks it down to two things: how close the crop is to physiological maturity ("black layer") and how much moisture is left in the soil profile. This field was near field capacity and closing in on black layer, so it likely won't need another pass, though that can change fast with weather.

Don't manage soil moisture off gut feel. Pair growth stage with real soil moisture insights and the last irrigation call gets a lot easier.

Your corn is in its final push — and it's doing it by pulling from itself.

At R5 (Dent stage), the plant shifts everything toward grain fill. Nutrients remobilize from leaves and stalk into the kernel. Kernel count is already determined. What's still up for grabs is seed mass, and that means late-season diseases and heat stress still matter.

Jack's out in North Dakota doing Field Recon on fields running virtual sufficiency index. At R3 (milk stage), he's seeing a little lower leaf firing - which is completely normal this time of year as the plant moves nitrogen up into the ear leaf.

The platform is reading it right. The field confirms it.

That's why we get boots on the ground.
