Fall is a great time to hike and trail run. The weather cools down and the days start to shorten.

Hiking or trail running up AND down are great ways to load the legs and specifically the quads for ski season prep.

And don’t forget Powder Hour!!

Moving our bodies in the outdoors is therapy for so many. Finding a spot to listen to the wind or watch clouds fly by. It’s a privilege to be able to access them and a valuable resource.

From a health and wellness perspective, in order to keep returning to the outdoors we need to be physically able to do it. I hear from and see so many patients who are working hard to learn and overcome pain or weakness to keep stepping outside here in our beautiful MWV and White Mtns.

Or others working to maintain their physical health - usually in response from some kind of injury and are motivated to stay ahead of the game.

I believe it’s worth it to learn why you may get hurt or how to manage your favorite activity’s volume so you don’t get sidelined. And miss out on that view that fills your cup or gets you out of bed.

I have a few mesh run hats, classic skida brim hats, nylon hats, sun buffs and old school headbands.

I love supporting and collaborating with other women led New England based brands.

They all have my logo on them so you can rock the brand!

Strength testing is a great way to get objective measures and to find asymmetries between each leg. When someone is already strong, it can be hard to spot these differences until you get real numbers.

Technology has made this easier and more flexible. Here I am testing a patient post op so we can see how well we have strengthened the surgical leg versus the non-surgical leg. It gives us great markers for the rehab process as a patient is returning to different activities.

A bit of a ramble on how access to trail can be intimidating as it grows as a sport - how media and brands make it extreme and professional.

I recently was in a group conversation about it with an international group at the trail run fest in Norway. It’s ever present all over the world so how do we make it seem more accessible to all levels and interested parties.

I draw some parallels to similar discussions in the backcountry skiing community and how sports tend to evolve with messaging.

What have been your experiences? Any thoughts on the topic?

Great trail running workshop last night! Everyone in the group was able to implement the technique changes and noted that running up hill did get easier. My job is done. 😀👍

The calf, ankle and foot do a lot of work in the mountains and on trails. We need them to be strong in all planes. The most common ankle sprain has the ankle rolling to the outside.

This exercise is great for increasing strength and stability through the outer foot and ankle.

Ankle injuries and ‘stabilizer’ tendinitis are really common problems when running and hiking on trails. Specifically around here in the White Mountains where every step is a rock and uneven surface.

You can train your feet and ankles to be more resilient against these loads by doing hopping drills.

Don’t forget about other foot strength but add these in too.
