For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Wade Christopher, surgical oncologist, and Dr. Barbara Craft, medical oncologist, share what they wish more people knew about breast cancer.

The biggest takeaway? Breast cancer is very treatable, especially when caught early. Today’s treatments are also more targeted and personalized, often with fewer side effects.

Early detection matters. Talk with your doctor about breast cancer screening and what’s right for you. 💗

We had a great time gathering in Washington, D.C. during ACS Clinical Congress!

It was so nice to bring together alumni, faculty, colleagues and friends of UMMC Surgery for a night of good conversation and catching up. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us and made the evening such a great one!

Every doctor was once a student. And every student has to start somewhere.

At UMMC, our residents learn every day alongside clinicians who teach, answer questions and share their experience. Here, Dr. Marc Walker and Michelle Henderson, NP, are guiding our Surgery residents through an outpatient procedure.

That’s what makes a teaching hospital unique. Patients receive care while residents learn, practice and grow under the guidance of experienced clinicians.

The classroom doesn’t always have four walls. Sometimes, it’s the exam room, the operating room or right at the bedside.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Laura Galarza back to UMMC!

Dr. Galarza attended Wake Forest School of Medicine before completing her Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency right here at UMMC. She has now returned as the newest member of our Plastic Surgery faculty.

Outside of work, Dr. Galarza enjoys traveling, reading, watercolor painting and spending time with her husband and son. She has lived in Chile, Mexico and the U.S. and is also a certified Spanish interpreter.

We’re so glad to have her back and look forward to all that’s ahead for Dr. Galarza and our Surgery team!

Help us give a warm welcome to Dr. Daniel Joh, our newest Plastic Surgeon! 💙

Dr. Joh is part of our Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and a member of the Jabaley-Songcharoen Center for Hand, Upper Extremity and Nerve Surgery. He brings extensive training from Duke University, where he completed his MD/PhD, Plastic Surgery residency and fellowship in Orthopaedic Hand, Upper Extremity and Microvascular Surgery.

Outside of the hospital, you’ll find Dr. Joh spending time with his wife, Jane, and their dogs. And if there’s one thing we already know about him, it’s that he’s a big Costco fan.

We’re happy to have you at UMMC, Dr. Joh! Welcome to the team!
