Your swallow happens thousands of times a day… but most people have never been taught how to do it correctly.

Let that sink in.

Swallowing dysfunction isn’t just about eating—it can quietly impact:
• Jaw development
• Teeth alignment
• Breathing patterns
• Sleep quality
• Facial muscle balance

And one of the biggest missing pieces?👉 Proper mouth posture.

Lips gently sealed.Tongue resting fully on the roof of the mouth.Teeth lightly together or slightly apart.Breathing through the nose.

Simple? Yes. Common? Not even close.

When the tongue isn’t in the right place or the swallow pattern is off, the body compensates… and over time, those small compensations can turn into bigger issues.

The good news? These patterns can be retrained.

Awareness is step one. Functional change is where the magic happens.

If you’ve ever noticed mouth breathing, tongue thrust, or tension when swallowing—your body might be asking for support.

Because how you swallow… shapes more than you think.

👏👏 At least Utah gets it! Whole body health, starts with the mouth- what we eat, how we breathe, sleep, etc. Collaboration with multiple providers is the key to wellness! Love this!

Utah has passed new legislation expanding where dental hygienists can practice, officially adding hospitals to the state’s definition of public health settings. The move is expected to broaden access to preventive oral healthcare while strengthening collaboration between dental and medical teams.

I’ve had patients tell me they’ve had braces two—sometimes even three—times! Our oral muscles are incredibly strong and play a major role in guiding our skeletal structure, including the position of our tongue and teeth. While orthodontics can move teeth into alignment, long-term stability depends on proper tongue posture and healthy oral muscle function.

If this sounds like you or someone you know, myofunctional therapy can help!

I commonly hear patients say 'my pediatrician never told me...'. Sadly, the quality of medical care can vary greatly. I strongly believe in the importance of self-education and proactive advocacy, having navigated my own son's health struggles. Trust your instincts and seek knowledge to ensure yours and your baby's well-being.

As we wrap up National Children’s Dental Health Month 🦷💙, I'm reposting this video from a naturopathic doctor I follow, that serves as such an important reminder for us as parents.
Even the smallest falls, bumps, or accidents can have long-term effects on our kids’ teeth and oral development. What may seem minor in the moment — a chipped tooth, a hit to the mouth, a little swelling — can sometimes lead to issues that show up months or even years later.

After any dental injury, be on the lookout for subtle changes like:
• Tooth discoloration
• Swelling or gum changes
• Sensitivity to hot/cold
• Complaints of pain when chewing
• Changes in sleep, behavior, or eating habits

Trust your gut. If something feels “off,” it’s always worth getting it checked out.
Protecting little smiles today helps prevent bigger problems tomorrow. Thank you for prioritizing your children’s oral health — it truly makes a lifelong difference. 💫

Soaked up all the knowledge at the Chicago Midwinter Meeting last week! 🦷✨
I spent time diving deeper into TMJ dysfunction, craniofacial pain, and airway-focused dentistry — including an incredible lecture on sleep-related breathing disorders and how dentistry and medicine truly connect. The more we understand the why behind jaw pain, headaches, neck tension, and poor sleep… the better we can treat the whole patient.
It’s exciting to see how airway and TMJ care continue to evolve — and I’m bringing that knowledge straight back to the office. 🙌
🚨 And here’s the part I’m REALLY excited about…
We have a new muscle therapy device coming soon that’s designed to relieve tension in the jaw and neck. This technology helps calm overactive muscles, reduce discomfort, and support TMJ treatment results. I can’t wait to start offering this to our patients who struggle with clenching, grinding, headaches, and facial pain.
Big things are coming! 💙
If you’ve been dealing with:
✔️ Jaw pain
✔️ Clicking or popping
✔️ Headaches
✔️ Neck tension
✔️ Poor sleep
Stay tuned — relief is on the way.
