Acupuncture is more than simply placing needles into muscles. One of the ways acupuncture may influence the body is through the nervous system.
When an acupuncture needle stimulates the skin, connective tissue, and underlying sensory nerve fibers, it sends signals through peripheral nerves toward the spinal cord and brain. The nervous system then processes these signals and can influence how the body responds.
Research suggests acupuncture may help modulate pain signaling, influence the release of naturally occurring pain-regulating chemicals, and affect autonomic nervous system activity involved in functions such as heart rate, digestion, muscle tension, and the stress response.
This is one reason acupuncture points may be selected both near an area of discomfort and farther away. We are not only working with the tissue where symptoms are occurring; we are providing sensory input that the nervous system can respond to.
In simple terms: the needle provides a stimulus, the nervous system receives the message, and the body creates a response.
Acupuncture is ultimately about working with the body’s own regulatory systems to support healthier patterns of function.
