A thoracic aortic aneurysm occurs when a portion of the aorta, the body’s largest artery, bulges or enlarges. It often has no symptoms until it becomes life-threatening.

Risk factors include:
🔹 High blood pressure
🔹 Hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis)
🔹 Smoking
🔹 Connective tissue disorders
🔹 Family history

If an aneurysm dissects, it can cause sudden, severe chest or back pain and requires emergency surgery. Early detection through routine imaging is key to preventing complications.

Pericardial effusion is a buildup of fluid around the heart that can reduce its ability to pump properly. If the pressure becomes too high, it may lead to cardiac tamponade—a life-threatening emergency. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, and low blood pressure. In serious cases, a pericardial window procedure may be needed to drain the fluid and relieve pressure.
