A laboratory study found that tea tree EO showed strong activity against uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC)—the primary cause of many urinary tract infections—including strains that readily form biofilms on urinary catheters. At concentrations as low as 0.25%, tea tree oil reduced bacterial growth, significantly inhibited bacterial attachment and biofilm formation on Foley catheters, and altered expression of a gene involved in curli fiber production, a key factor in bacterial adhesion. While these are in vitro findings, they add to the growing evidence that tea tree oil may help disrupt one of the bacteria's most important survival strategies: biofilm formation.
