So much amazing input this weekend. It was a reckoning. It has taken me 7 years to actually teach a yoga class. Out of the thousands of classes I have taken, out of the trainings I have participated in, the thought N.E.V.E.R. occurred to me to teach. I never wanted to teach - only to help - until the (then) acting president of a yoga non-profit openly criticized and challenged my intentions and ability for doing yoga in defense of his losing his own credibility...
I knew I would eventually be teaching. He was fired soon after. Thank god I have facebook screenshots of the whole encounter. My life is not defined by yoga, but my life is made much better by yoga. We all have a timeline, we all have character witnesses, we all have issues that we support. I sleep great at night, I enjoy the people in my life. I am grateful that I have come so far. Upsetting things happen everyday, and we must stand ready for anything. I am only one person, but I chose to stand on the right side on the individual teachers, the contract employees, and former employees - I don't care where you stood then, it's all about where you stand now.

If we're lucky, yoga becomes a personal expression of our natural selves. Maybe the self that we have wanted to become. I find that, sometimes when I do yoga, that really... I have been a more than capable person this whole time... yet, I refused to see it, or I refused to believe it.

The world around us reinforces that we are not unique, we are just one of the billions of individuals on this planet, but that is a distinctly chosen perspective, not necessarily the truth. Just because people don't always acknowledge our own voices, our own feelings, our own expressions, or even our own views - that doesn't determine who we are. The only thing that's required of us is that we surrender to the truth.
