🚨🚨 BREAKING: Research catches up with physiology....

Don't want to push for a long time in labor? Just don't push for a while and use gravity. Then you might end up pushing less than 15 minutes!

Is purple pushing FINALLY on its way out? While many facilities and providers have stepped away from strong and forceful purple pushing, variations of it still exist. This often leaves parents pushing for 1, 2, or even 3 hours - especially in first births and with epidurals.

Despite awareness of the fetal ejection reflex and birth being a normal physiological process, modern obstetrics left many believing we MUST push as soon as we reach full dilation.

Yet this often leaves moms pushing for hours.

Research from Besançon University Hospital, France looked at over 10,000 term singleton births.

Their research concluded: Under a delayed pushing policy of up to 3 hours, active pushing remained less than 15 minutes, supporting high rates of spontaneous vaginal birth and potentially reducing the need for instrumental delivery.

While there are occasional situations where directed pushing might be indicated (baby showing signs if distress, signs of cord compression, etc.), research is showing what midwives, many l&d nurses, and doulas have observed: birth needs patience.

👇🏽 Did you labor down or push as soon as you were fully dilated?

Jennie Joseph 👏👏👏

Midwives save lives – and that’s exactly what Jennie Joseph-Midwife has been doing through Commonsense Childbirth Inc. since 2003.

We began our grantmaking in the United States in 2013 following reports that the U.S. maternal mortality rate was worsening. As the founder of Commonsense Childbirth in Florida, Jennie is a national role model and movement leader, and was an obvious first U.S.-based grantee.

Jennie’s work is rooted in the midwifery model of care. She developed her guiding philosophy, “the JJ Way”, that centers the birthing person in their experience of care, ensuring they are heard, respected, and met with quality, dignified care. Jennie also founded the first Black woman-led, nationally accredited, midwifery school in the U.S., Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery.

Jennie often says that midwifery is more than a profession; it is a calling. She is deeply invested in restoring and sustaining the next generation of culturally congruent providers who, she reminds us, “stand in the care gap” for their communities, offering a higher standard of care that is transforming maternal health outcomes.

We are proud to have partnered with Jennie for so many years, supporting her extraordinary work.

“What we’ve been seeing, especially over the last few years, is that all three of these factors – getting to a provider, being seen by a provider, and feeling safe, seeking care – are all systematically breaking down at the same time.” - Divya Sooryakumar, Every Mother Counts

First-trimester care is a key predictor of healthy pregnancies. Yet, for four years now, early access has been declining. A new report from March of Dimes reveals that systemic factors are keeping 25% of pregnant women in the U.S. from accessing prenatal care in their first trimester.
