Volunteers in Medicine, Jacksonville (VIM-Jax) Providing FREE outpatient primary and specialty medical services to Greater Jacksonville’s WORKING uninsured

Our success can be directly attributed to the passion and commitment of more than 230 ACTIVE VOLUNTEER healthcare and non-clinical professionals that perform a wide array of services at our downtown clinic five days a week. These volunteer professionals qualify patients, manage medical records and deliver vital preventative medical care to our patients. On-site program specialties include mental health counseling, vision and eye care, cardiology and heart disease prevention and maintenance, diabetes and nutrition counseling. Volunteers in Medicine’s signature “Healthy Habits” programs include regular patient wellness events and activities including blood pressure and glucose screenings, mammograms, stress tests, and “Healthy Habits” neighborhood walks.

💙 In Loving Memory of Dr. Kathleen Bloom

It is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Dr. Kathleen Bloom.

Dr. Bloom’s impact on Volunteers in Medicine extends far beyond the years she spent volunteering with us. She helped spearhead our Women’s Pap Days and, alongside Dr. Liz Loriz, VIM Board Emeritus, helped establish VIM’s nurse practitioner staffing model—contributions that helped shape the care we provide today.

We are deeply grateful for the time, knowledge, compassion, and heart Dr. Bloom shared with VIM and our patients. Her legacy of service will live on through the work she helped build and the lives she touched.

She will be dearly missed and forever remembered as a special part of the VIM family. 💙

💙 Meet Our September Women with Heart Honoree: Shannon N. Baum! 💙

This September, Volunteers in Medicine is proud to recognize Shannon N. Baum as our 2026 Women with Heart Honoree! 🌟

For more than two decades, Shannon has dedicated her career to Baptist Health, serving in leadership roles that reflect her passion for exceptional patient care and operational excellence. Today, she serves as System Director of Patient Care Logistics at Baptist Medical Center, where she oversees the Flex Team, Patient Care Logistics Center, Cardiac Monitoring Unit, Virtual Monitoring Unit and Transport Services.

Shannon also serves as the scheduling and staffing workstream lead for Project Core, Baptist Health’s new human capital management initiative. Through these roles, she helps improve patient throughput, strengthen clinical teams and implement innovative solutions that enhance the patient experience.

A proud Jacksonville native, Shannon earned her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University before returning home to complete her Master of Science in Management at the University of North Florida.

Her leadership and dedication have earned her multiple nominations for the Lotus Leadership Award and Spirit of Magnet Award, as well as being a two-time recipient of the Department of Defense Patriot Award for her support of Baptist Health team members serving in the National Guard or Reserve.

Shannon’s heart for service extends well beyond the workplace. In 2025, she served as a campus co-lead for Baptist Health’s annual United Way campaign, and she frequently volunteers alongside her team at Feeding Northeast Florida, giving back to the community she proudly calls home.

Outside of work and service, Shannon and her husband are raising two amazing sons and enjoy family travel, boating, beach days and cheering on their boys at sporting events. 💙

As our early Friday closures come to an end, we're looking forward to a busy fall filled with what matters most: being here for our patients and providing the compassionate care they deserve.
