Love when I get messages like this!

Behind every teacher is a story you probably haven't heard.

I wanted this interview to be different. Instead of talking only about plants, I wanted to understand the person behind the work.

Merriwether's Foraging Texas shares honestly about one of the hardest seasons he's walked through and why he continues teaching despite the challenges.

The full conversation is now available on the Grace Rooted Herbalist Podcast. Link in comments.

A little before-and-after of the apothecary!

When I first got my clinic ready, I painted, assembled furniture, got utilities turned on, and slowly pulled everything together. By the end of it, I knew I needed better shelving, but I just couldn't figure out how to make it happen.

Then my aunt and uncle stepped in. They measured the space, went home and built these shelves from scratch, painted them, and came back to install them.

I can't tell you what a gift this was. They completely transformed the room, and now it finally feels like the professional apothecary I had envisioned.

Thank you so much, Linda Warren and Doug Warren. Your generosity, talent, and encouragement mean more than you know.

Now I can't wait to fill these shelves with herbs that will help care for this community. ❤️

"Why can't I lose weight?" is a common question, and there are many possible reasons. In terms of herbs, people can use teas taken before a meal to reduce appetite. Catnip, chamomile, red clover, passionflower, peppermint, chickweed, licorice, hoodia, raspberry, gotu kola and forskolin come to mind.

However, food is the foundation. For clients who need blood sugar support, have concerns about thyroid health and report inflammation symptoms, something like this meal plan can be beneficial.

This morning's haul includes (from top to bottom)

🌿 Yarrow
Traditionally used to support wound healing, fevers, digestion, and healthy circulation.

🌿 Lemon Balm
A gentle calming herb often used for stress, tension, sleep support, digestion, and uplifting the mood.

🌿 Self-Heal
Traditionally valued for soothing inflammation, supporting immune function, and helping the body repair and recover.

They'll get rinsed, then I dry the yarrow for later use. Self heal and lemon balm are best preserved from fresh, so they go straight into 80 proof alcohol to make tinctures.

What about herbs for childbirth?! My daughter is having a baby soon and working with a midwife instead of giving birth at a hospital. We've been talking about options for pain, so today I walked the woods looking for Black haw, Viburnum prunifolium. It's highly regarded as a uterine tonic and has often been used for menstrual cramps and labor pains. Its compounds relax smooth muscles, making it useful for easing severe back pain, neck stiffness, and intestinal cramps. And it grows right here in East Texas!
I spot it by first looking for its super glossy mid-sized leaves. The trunk is slender and usually bent, kind of like a dogwood. Bark color is medium to dark. In early spring it has creamy flower clusters, right now those have already turned to green berries. The ripe black berries have been used for jams and preserves, but I've never used them that way.
I pruned branches between the diameter of a pencil and my thumb and stripped away the leaves, then cut them in smaller sections to take home. Tonight I'll rinse them off then use a knife to pare away the outer bark. I'll soak it in 80 proof alcohol and strain it when the day gets closer. I plan to mix her final formula with Motherwort, Cramp bark and yarrow, all often used during delivery.

My favorite blend right now (with a pinch of stevia leaf for a tiny bit of sweetness, even tastes good cold!)
-Chamomile helps calm the nervous system, ease tension, and support more restful sleep when stress feels physically and mentally overwhelming.
-Skullcap helps quiet a racing or overstimulated mind and relaxes tight, stress-related tension in the body.
-Motherwort supports the body during stress by calming nervous system agitation while also easing stress-related heart palpitations and tension.
-Passionflower helps reduce anxious, looping thoughts and encourages deeper relaxation and more restorative sleep.
-Mimosa acts as a gentle mood-supportive herb that can help lift emotional heaviness, soothe irritability, and soften the effects of chronic stress.
What's your go-to when life gets challenging?

After giving birth new moms are often told to take sitz baths. Adding calendula and yarrow is supportive, but what new mom has time for that?! Custom tea bags sure would be a nice Mother’s Day gift for the mother to be, just toss it in the tub or basin and enjoy a soothing soak.
