Planning a quick July road trip or visiting family across the Sunshine State? Traveling with kidney disease requires a bit of extra planning, but it is entirely possible!

Your Summer Travel Checklist:

📆Schedule Ahead: If you are on dialysis, make sure your transient treatments are booked weeks in advance.

🎒Pack an Emergency Snack Kit: Keep kidney-safe, low-sodium snacks (like unsalted crackers or low-potassium protein bars) in the car in case of traffic or delays.

❄️Keep Meds Cool: Never leave your medications in a hot car or glove box! Keep them in a climate-controlled bag or a small cooler if needed.

Safe travels, and enjoy your summer memories! 🚗💙

We’ve made it to the end of July! Let's close out our summer series with a vital habit for everyone managing kidney health: monitoring your body for fluid retention.

When the Florida heat hits, our blood vessels naturally dilate, which can cause fluid to pool in our feet and ankles. But when you have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) or are on dialysis, your kidneys have a harder time filtering out that extra fluid, leading to deeper swelling (edema) and increased blood pressure.

How to track your fluid balance at home:

⚖ Weigh In Daily: Weigh yourself at the same time every morning (after using the restroom, before eating). A sudden, rapid weight gain of 2–3 pounds in a single day usually means your body is holding onto fluid, not fat.

🧦The Sock Check: When you take your socks off at night, look at your ankles. Are there deep, red indents left behind?

🫁Check Your Breathing: Is it getting harder to breathe when you lie flat in bed? This can be a sign that excess fluid is shifting toward your lungs.

💡 What to do: If you notice sudden weight jumps or increased swelling, cut back on your sodium immediately and notify your kidney care team. Keeping your fluid in check keeps your heart and kidneys safe!

Thank you for joining our summer health series! Keep staying cool, eating fresh, and protecting those kidneys! 💪❤️

Managing appointments, dialysis schedules, labs, and dietary restrictions can feel exhausting—and the heavy summer heat only adds to that stress.

Take 5 minutes today to decompress with these kidney-safe relaxation tips:

🫁 Mindful Breathing: Sit in front of a fan or AC vent, close your eyes, and take 10 slow, deep breaths. Focus on the cool air.

🌅A Visual Vacation: Put on some calming ocean sounds and visualize a cool breeze.

🙆Gentle Stretching: If your doctor approves, do some light, indoor stretching to release physical tension built up from sitting during treatments.

You are doing a wonderful job navigating this journey. Be gentle with yourself today! ✨

Watermelon is practically the official mascot of summer, and yes—it is relatively low in potassium! However, for our dialysis patients, watermelon comes with a hidden warning.

Did you know? Watermelon is made of over 90% water!

🍉Eating a large bowl of watermelon is essentially the same as drinking a glass of water.

The Golden Rule: Keep your portion to a strict 1/2 cup or less to prevent unexpected fluid weight gain before your next treatment.

Enjoy the flavors of summer, but keep those portions in check to keep your heart and lungs safe! ❤️

Living with kidney disease means your body has a harder time regulating temperature and fluid balance. With July in full swing, knowing the difference between normal summer sweat and heat illness is crucial.

Watch out for these warning signs:
😵 Dizziness or lightheadedness
💪 Muscle cramps
🤕 Nausea or sudden headache
😰 Heavy sweating or unusually fast pulse

If you start feeling these symptoms, get into the AC immediately, mist your skin with cool water, and notify your care team if you don't feel better quickly. Your safety is the priority!

When the Florida humidity hits, the urge to chug a cold drink is real. But if you're on a fluid restriction, that can lead to dangerous fluid overload between dialysis sessions.

Try these thirst-busting alternatives that won't add to your fluid weight:

🍬Sour Candies: Sucking on sugar-free lemon drops or sour hard candies stimulates saliva production to wet your mouth.

❄️The Cold Rinse: Rinse your mouth out with ice-cold water or mouthwash, but spit it out instead of swallowing.

🍓Freeze Your Fruit: Freeze grapes or blueberries (mind your portions!) and eat them slowly.

What is your go-to trick for beating thirst?

Summer in Florida is no joke! When the temperatures skyrocket, it can put extra physical stress on your body—especially if you are managing kidney disease.

Here are 3 quick ways to stay cool and stress-free this week:
1️⃣ Time it Right: Avoid outdoor activities between 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun is at its peak.
2️⃣ Dress Cool: Wear loose, light-colored, breathable cotton clothing.
3️⃣ Protect Your Access: For our dialysis warriors, if you have a catheter or graft, remember to keep it completely dry. Avoid swimming in pools, lakes, or the ocean unless cleared by your care team!

Take a deep breath, stay in the AC, and put your health first today. 💙

Happy Friday! For anyone on a strict fluid restriction—especially on hemodialysis—the hot summer months make managing thirst incredibly stressful.

If you are feeling parched but are close to your fluid limit, try The Ice Cube Trick:

Why it works: Sucking on an ice cube satisfies thirst much longer than gulping down liquid, and it takes up less volume in your stomach!

The Math: One standard ice cube is only about 15 mL (1 tablespoon) of water.

⚠️ Bonus Tip: Try freezing your allowable fluid into ice cubes using a bit of lemon juice or mint for a refreshing, low-potassium burst of flavor! 🍋
