💙 Why is Parent Training such an important part of ABA therapy?

ABA isn’t meant to happen only when the therapy team is present. Parent training—often called caregiver or family guidance—is designed to help parents understand their child’s behavior, learn the strategies being used in treatment, and confidently apply those skills during everyday life.

Parent training may include learning how to:

• Understand why a behavior is happening
• Respond consistently to challenging behavior
• Teach functional communication and replacement skills
• Use reinforcement effectively
• Support routines, transitions, toileting, hygiene, sleep, and independence
• Practice strategies outside of formal therapy sessions
• Help skills generalize across people, places, and situations

🌱 Why does it matter?
A child may spend several hours each week receiving ABA—but they spend far more time with their family. When caregivers understand the treatment plan and consistently use the same strategies, children have more opportunities to practice their skills in the places where those skills actually matter.

📋 And yes—parent participation may be required.
Many insurance-funded ABA programs require documented caregiver involvement or parent/caregiver training as part of an authorized treatment plan. The exact participation requirements can vary by insurer, Medicaid program, treatment plan, and individual circumstances.

Parent training isn't about judging parenting or expecting families to become therapists. It's about giving caregivers practical tools so progress can continue long after the therapy session ends. 💜

🧩 What does the DSM-5 actually have to do with an autism diagnosis?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) isn’t diagnosed based on one behavior, one questionnaire, or one difficult area. Clinicians use established DSM-5 diagnostic criteria as part of a comprehensive evaluation.

For an ASD diagnosis, clinicians look for a specific pattern involving challenges in social communication and social interaction along with restricted or repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities. They also consider developmental history, when symptoms began, how they affect everyday functioning, and whether another condition better explains what is being observed.

Most importantly, the DSM-5 provides diagnostic criteria, it does not define the person. 💙 Understanding the criteria can help families better understand why a diagnosis was made and what kinds of supports may be helpful.

Happy Monday! 🩵💙

As we gear up for the upcoming school year it's important to know the difference between medical and educational autism.

Medical Autism and Educational Autism are not the same and understanding the difference can make all the difference when advocating for your child.

A medical diagnosis opens the door to healthcare services and therapies, while an educational eligibility determination decides whether a student qualifies for special education supports at school. A child may meet one, both, or neither, depending on the evaluation and purpose. Knowing the distinction helps families navigate both the medical and educational systems with confidence.

I can hardly believe it, but we've had Megan on our team for a full year now!!!! Looking back, Megan joined the Down to Earthers during a very uncertain time. She is employee number 3 and we had two active clients at the time (thats hard to imagine too 🤣) Here's the thing though, when passionate people join forces, there really are no limits! Its been amazing year and every one of Megan's sessions are pure magic. If giggles and laughter took care of payroll, Megan would be a top earner! Thank you for believing in us Megan Wagner, we would not be the same team without YOU!

Well this post is long overdue, but someone was selfie shy! Taylor began working with us back in April. She hit the ground running in our newly formed "float" position, but quickly became a permanent teammate for several of our clients. Both clients and parents alike are fighting over Taylor and she no longer has downtime! One of our clients even has a special "Taylor" calendar so he knows when she comes next. Taylor has exceptional clinical and play skills and is happy to help wherever she can. She works between Rock and Walworth counties. Welcome, officially, to the team Taylor!
