Big sunscreen news from the FDA!

For the first time in more than 20 years, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has added a new active ingredient to the list of permitted sunscreen ingredients.

Sunscreens in the U.S. are regulated as over-the-counter drugs, meaning any new UV filter must undergo rigorous safety and efficacy review. That process has historically been slow, leaving U.S. consumers with fewer options than people in other parts of the world.

Today, that changes. Bemotrizinol is a broad-spectrum UV filter that helps protect against both UVA and UVB rays and has been widely used in Europe and other regions for years. The FDA now considers it generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE) for use in adults and children 6 months and older.

From a formulation standpoint, this opens the door to more photostable, cosmetically elegant sunscreens, an important step toward products people will actually use consistently.

But it’s also a reminder of how far the U.S. still has to go. For decades, Americans have had access to far fewer UV filters than consumers in regions like the EU and Australia, where dozens of options are available and innovation has moved much faster.
