This call's speaker is Daniel Landry who is the president of the The National Forum of ESRD Networks, chair of the ESRD Network 1 Medical Review Board, and a nephrology leader at Baystate Medical Center. He also directs inpatient, critical care, and outpatient dialysis programs and practices with Kidney Care and Transplant Services of New England.

In a video from the KidneyTalk Renal Support Network, Kristin Rice shares her personal experience with peritoneal dialysis (PD), including how she incorporates treatment into her daily life, work, and family routine. For chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease, the difference between paying before you eat versus after you eat changes everything about your meal.

🛑 Pay-before restaurants (fast food/fast-casual) almost always serve pre-processed and pre-marinated food packed with hidden sodium and inorganic phosphorus additives to keep it shelf-stable. The kitchen relies on strict assembly lines, so they usually cannot customize your meal to be renal-safe.

🟢 Pay-after restaurants (sit-down dining): give you a direct line of communication with the restaurant's staff member. You can ask your server to have the chef grill your protein without added salt, leave off phosphate-heavy sauces, and swap out high-potassium sides.

If you want control over your kidney health, look for a menu where you can talk to the chef or server throughout your meal. Your kidneys will thank you for choosing a kitchen that can cook fresh! 🍽️
